Default Calling all mechanics! Knowledge needed!

Suspected my DMF was knackered and VX confirmed it so took it to my local garage on Thursday as VX wanted £1441 to change that and the clutch.

Get a call Thursday morning from the garage to say they didn't realise there was some part that was needed so job would now be £1065. Still cheaper than VX.

Got a call yesterday to say that they had to drive 60 miles to pick uo another part, so car wouldn't be ready until Saturday midday.

Called me today to say that they put it all back together (took them 7 hours apparently), but they think the gearbox is knackered coz it won't change gear properly.

I just drove it up the road and changed two gears. It's terrible. It wasn't in that condition when I gave it to them and VX could confirm as they drove the car last week! So now the car is off to a 'gearbox specialist' on Monday to find out why it's stiff to get in and out of gear.

Now I'm not a mechanic, but surely it's due to the clutch not being fitted or adjusted properly??? Either way, I'm not paying a penny over the original quote no matter how long it took them and I'm certainly not paying for a new gearbox.

Can anyone with some mechanical knowledge give me a suggestion as to what could be the problem as the monkeys at my local garage don't seem to have a clue!

I can only assume that is the case or they hav e damaged it m8. Stand by and don't pay them especially if Vx confirm the gearbox was properly functioning.

i have heard of this before and it was down to the wrong clutch being fitted. i know for certain that the 120 and 150 flywheels are different and i am certain that clutch is too, depending on which transmission is fitted, either an f40 or m32. Maybe the garage need to check which flywheel/clutch they bought and its right for your car.

Is it a 120? Some have F32 gearbox.

It maybe that the clutch is smaller on that model, and fitting a larger clutch has somehow damaged the casing?

Reminds me of a similar problem I had years ago, when, inadvertently, I fitted a 1256 clutch to an 1156 Viva engine. Engine wouldn't turn because bell housing was smaller and was catching on the clutch cover! Fortunately, not enough torque to do any damage.

Hope you get to the bottom of this mate.

It's a 150. Don't know if it will go in and out with the engine off as the garage have the car. They have fitted a new slave. They phoned me up on the day I gave it to them asking for more money to buy the part.

I hope it gets sorted soon too. I'm supposed to be taking it to the south of France on Saturday for the family holiday and I need to get 4 new tyres before then...

If I get the car back on Monday they will have had it 5 days. It's supposed to be 5 hours! Fingers crossed they find the problem and quick and don't charge me for it!

Doesnt always work out going to fred in his shed does it!!
Dealers are pricey but at least it would have been done all in one day and all working correctly.
Hopefully they havent wrecked anything, dont pay any extra than you was quoted though.....

£1065 is still extortionate the bits are 414 quid so that leaves 651 for 5 hours labour, thats 130 quid an hour, vx stealers dont even charge that much and at least your car would work afterwards, don't get me wrong I hate the stealers but it sounds to me like your "cheap" mechanic (and i use the word mechanic very loosely) has had your pants down.

lol diesel dog, 1256 viva??omg i cut my teeth on those lil cars, those were the days, easy repairs, lmao.

average dealer rate is £65 per hour plus vat and VX time is 5.2hours, the rest is VX parts, which are way more expensive than factors. if i recall correctly, the dmf from dealer is near £400 on its own, about £280 from factors.

Dealers dont always get it right, the issue in this thread is excatly what happened at a dealer that shall remain nameless and it was down to the wrong clutch spinner plate being fitted.
