Had the same problem with my saloon after a rather over zealous MOT tester nearly broke the damn thing of the hinges.

Took me ages to re-align it, but it is the striker plate and where it sits in the lock mechanism. Start by bringing it up quite a lot (the boot lid will rattle) and slowly wind it back down a bit at a time, also wind the bump stops up slightly (the rubber bungs on the sides of the boot lid).

just had the boot in kit form and fitted it , the one i removed was different though , it was alot bigger and had a steel cable running from the lock to the main body , no more noise or courtesy light every two minutes when going over bumps

Have just fixed this issue myself, found it really easy and I am hopeless at DIY stuff.

Ever since I have had my car (8 months) the boot has never shut properly. You had to really slam it, if you didn't it wouldn't close properly - the boot lid bounced back up slightly and the boot lid wasn't closed properly, it was closed but was loose in the lock.

Last night I finally snapped and decided to tackle it. Wasn't sure what I was doing at first, fiddled a bit with the lock in the boot and couldn't really see what I could adjust there so decided it must be the striker plate. On my first attempt of moving the striker plate I hit gold (or so I thought), I moved the plate slightly to the right and hey presto the boot lid shut perfectly.

Got into the car this morning, oh no, the boot open warning light is on on the dash. No amount of opening and closing the boot would make it go out. I was cursing, there was no way I could drive around with that on the dash.

Don't laugh, it was then I realised that the striker plate not only moved left and right, but also up and down!

Keeping the striker plate in the same horizontal position, I moved it as high as it would go (I thought I would start at the top and make small adjustments). I didn't need to make any more adjustments, with the striker plate in the correct horizontal position and as high as it will go in the vertical position, the boot shuts perfectly and no warning light on dash!

If you're having this issue, I would suggest finding the right horizontal position for the striker plate and moving it up as high as it will go and then make any vertical adjustments if necessary from there.

It worked for me and hopefully, it will for you and save an expensive trip to the stealers.
