Default CDTi 1.9 150 SRi: Tested

Well after trying the CDTi 3.0 V6 a couple of weeks ago it was time to try a CDTi 1.9 150 SRi.....
I know lots and lots of you guys have these so reading this wont be too exciting but its a different car for me and not what I'm used too!
Well first time I took it out it certainly didn't have the pull of the V6, I think I was really spoilt by trying the V6 first, but it seem to go well enough for a 1.9. The handling was a lot better (although the V6 was an Elite with standard suspension). The handling is much more composed and far less body roll than my 2.2. A much nicer ride and better overall handling, as long as you dont push it too much. But at the end of the day, it aint no scooby, its a large family/rep car and it does a fine job of what it does. Equipment levels do seem to have dropped off though. Noticed the rear passenger heater/cooling vents have been replaced by a storeage thingy, and a few other bits as well.
Now for the points I didnt like, IMO.....
I kept repeatedly stalling it, even after driving it for a few miles, something which I never did once in the V6. The flat spot nearly killed me when I tried to pull out on a busy roundabout, just didnt give it enough revs. I found the driving experience much more jerkier then the V6 and my 2.2 petrol. And I'm afraid the missus didnt really like it (due to the points just mentioned). Also, it just really isnt that fast enough for what I would like. In standard form, it didnt seem much quicker than what I'm used to with my 2.2. The fuel consumption wasnt bad at about 41mpg average (car had only done 4000 miles though). I know you can put a box on or remap, but I dont think I could go through the hassle of the insurance and potential reliability problems.
So I think I might be looking for a V6, although I'd like a facelift and they do still seem quite pricey (£14K+).
I just hope the V6 handles better with the SRi suspension, I'll have to find one and try it out....

sounds like you were expecting more.

lol @ stalling. I do that every so often. not enough gas. the 1.9 does not have a flat spot it is just very poor low down so you need a bit of gas when trying to get out quickly. I have actually found it the easiest car to launch out of the cars I've driven. the V6 i not significantly quicker and you will pay the price for mpg. not many around though. can you not get a preface lift 55 plate v6?

Your 2.2 direct has a few more horses than the 1.9 CDTi, though the diesel has more torque, you'd probably find that yours is quicker off the line (it'll be lighter too) but the diesel might be quicker in the gears with the extra torque, though it'll run out of puff before the 2.2. At least that's what i'd expect, and I know that Plasma's remapped 1.9 with a good dollop of horses and torque more than my remapped 2.2, doesn't get away from me at speed on the moto...erm private runway by as much as some people would have you believe that it should except when there's suitcases in my way

Is that a fair comment Dean?

As you say though, the V6 CDTi is a different kettle of fish, especially when beefed up a bit like Cabby's.

thisc would make me wonder if the claims for these tuning boxes are a tad optimistic if youre saying that a remapped 2.2 petrol can keep up with a supposed 195 bhp diesel i find that hard to beleive spikey mate no offence by the way although ive been in a crd1 equipped 150 cdti (big peachys) and i dont think a 2.2 even a tuned one could keep up with it! just my opinion

Like I say, I ask Plasma for a read on this as he'll be able to say how hard (or not as the case may be) he has to push to get away from me (he does get away from me as you'd expect).

I've noticed you have to drop out of sixth to get away, the little puff of smoke and a change in the car's stance is a dead give away somewhere around mid range speeds though, 40-70-ish you drop me way too easily

You thinking of a little side by side action at the Pod?
