Default Bells Palsy...any one offer advice on experiences?

    Hi all

had a difficult few days as my mum was taken to hospital with a suspected stroke. after rigorous tests we were confirmed to believe my mum has bells palsy which is a viral infection effecting a side of her face so her mouth is now slanted and has trouble closing her eye as all her left side muscles for the face don't work due to them being weak.

apparently after reading many websites and books about this it is completely reversible with steroids and other vitamins, exercises and massage.

i was just wondering if anyone had any life experience with this and could offer advice.

    cheers

My mate had this and he's only 30, i cant remember exactly how it was treated but he's fine now. only lasted a month or so IIRC. So i wouldn't worry too much...

    Thumbs up

Had it myself when i lived and worked in USA
the doctors seemed to thing i got the infection from a tick bite
It swells the one of two linings of the nerves that control the left and right hand muscles off your face
    so looks like a stroke
scared the c*&^ out of me and my other half
I thought it would get better but after 3 days she sent me of to a walk in clinic
they diagnosed bells palsy and prescribed steroids and very strong antibiotics
took about a 3 weeks to get to 80% well and about another month to get to 100%
no after affects so dont worry to much

The key to Bells Palsy is speed to treatment as if delayed it can result in permanent disfigurement. The Doc will issue a script for this but generally it does self recover, however artificial tears can prevent the eye drying out and scarring the surface.

This is not a preventable illness and is not contagious. It can take between 1 month and six months to fully recover and may leave some residual laziness in the face but in general it will fully recover in most people.

My sister had it when she was 19 I think and now you would never be able to tell anything was wrong with her and someone I work with has had it back in 2006, she was in her 40's at the time and seeing her now you'd never be able to tell either so given time hopefully everything will go back and you'll never be able to tell.

A friend of mine had it who was 72 years old. After a while it pretty well cleared up but it did leave him with slightly lower mouth on one side.

I had this a few years back, left side of my face, lasted about 6 - 8 weeks and went away... then three months after i got it again this time on the right! another 6-8 weeks went away... 2 years or so later got it AGAIN on the left, this took almost 9 weeks to **** orf.. left the left side of my face week and when tired my left eye closes slightly

BUT i have never heard of anyone else getting it 3 ****** times lol

I wish you and your mum all the best and a speedy recovery for her mate.. I understand the fear of a stroke as i felt the same, pretty damn scary

Guy at work was recently diagnosed with this, he's had it for around 6 weeks now hasnt cleared up as yet, IIRC he;s on around 10 tablets a day for it. Doctors reckon it should go away though.

I had it (left side of face) when I was 20. Had 1 injection/day. Mostly went away in around 2 months although the left eye took a little longer before I could blink properly. Nuisance but not a big deal.
