    Default aircon question

when i turn my aircon on when stationary it makes like a v short hiss noise from the engine bay as it comes on. also the engine doesent seem very happy when its turned on the revs drop slightly and it seems like its struggiling to idle. it works fine though.
    any advice guys?

recently change my condenser as mine did the same, was cold when on but got warmer over time and the noise became audible inside through the vents. might be a good idea to put some dye in the system and check with a uv light to check for leaks.

if you can get hold of a temp gauge it should be around the 5 - 6c mark or colder if working correctly although mine had some gas in it and felt cold it was only reading 10c.

if you go to kwik fit they will do a vacum test on the system which will indicate any leaks and shouldnt charge you if leaks are found.

when the aircon is switched on it engages the clutch on the air con pump, which increases the drag on the engine and the revs will drop for a moment, then the engine management system detects it and brings the revs back to normal idle. Maybe the hiss sound is just the pump starting to circulate the aircon gas,or possibly just the drive belt taking up the extra tension but as with all these things, its worth having the system checked, just in case its the start of a leak.

The hiss is definitely low gas, the lower the gas the longer the hiss will be.
It will go completely after a recharge.
The compressors on these are prone to the joint between the two halves of the aluminium corroding. This corrosion creeps under the large 'o' ring seal between the tow halves and makes a leak. If hard up it is possible to clean and re-assemble the compressor .........
On any compressors I install I put a wrap of self amalgamating tape around the join to stop corrosion. The only way of telling if this is the case is to check for the fluorescent dye marker with an infra red torch (all Vauxhall systems are now loaded with dye out of the factory - unless it's been refilled and the dye will have been lost)

The 'O' ring doesn't stand much of chance seated against this corrosion!
