Default V6CDTi - Oil level sensor playing up or not enough oil?

Was driving around Germany and a couple of times the oil light came on. Upon inspection WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING the oil level was on low. If I left the warm engine sitting for 5 minutes (as instructed for an oil check) the oil level was max and the oil level light was off.

Is this a sensor playing up or is there really not enough oil? Serviced it 5k ago and done most of the miles the past week. Mobil 1 5w50 oil.

Sounds like the sensor mate. Possibly best idea after all the driving round 'Germany' is to change the oil anyway so you know definintely how much is in there, then see if it still comes on.

    You do smoke a lot...

Never check the level with the engine running, always when it's warm and it's been stopped for a few mins, maybe 10 iirc.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

As Big Sig says, leave it 10 mins with engine off before checking. I made the mistake of panicking after checking the oil too quickly after stopping the engine and overfilled mine. There a plate by the bonnet latch saying the same thing.

Sorry if I'm asking a stupid question, but which oil light? The one that indicates a problem with oil pressure (red) or with the oil level (yellowish)?

I wouldn't be back home if it was the red light

What confuses me is that the oil level really is on MIN, but goes to MAX 5 minutes after the engine's been off. I think the sensor gets confused somehow. I'll put it on opcom later to see if there's a problem

Well, considering it has 7.5 litres inside, it's not hard to imagine there is one litre circulating when the engine is running. In fact, when the oil level ("cool-measured") is not on MAX, it's possible that the oil level in the dipstick is below MIN with the engine running... and the oil level light shouldn't be warning you. I don't know where the level sensor is located, but either something is blocking oil access or the sensor is failing.

Mine did the same thing while driving in France. Scared the living daylights out of me, but the level was fine.
I think it's another little gremlin in the sensor.

I think someone put the wrong type of coolant in mine so you should imagine the face I made when I opened the expansion tank and all that white foam came out. Not nice when you're 1000 miles from home
I'll be servicing it in 2k Oil + filter and coolant
