I hate to be the bearer of bad news but that sounds very familiar to alot of peoples experience with the af33 box , myself being one of them.
It's more than likely the gearbox coolant issue , which was a recall , but a few slipped the net.
I buried my 3.2 elite at 5 yrs old with 42000 miles on it.

    Default Auto Box

Check to see if your coolant from the expansion tank is vanishing without obvious leak anywhere, its probably has to do with the radiator seal recall some years back. when the seal gives way, the coolant goes in the autobox. causing some damage. ....It could just be Transmission speed sensors, when these sensors fail, the box defaults to second and fifth gears only....It could be low or expired fluid. Stop driving the car until the fault is diagnosed.
worst case scenario.........new \ recondition auto box

Take it tp a reputable auto box specialist and get them to look into it. As said, it could be just a couple of speed sensors which are cheap to fix or it could be the dreaded coolant in gearbox (which will require a rebuild).

When my autobox started to play up it only happened when it was up to temperature, I cant remember what was wrong with it now but it was not a coolant in box issue. This also reuired a rebuild.

Unfortunatley if it is the speed sensors they are not a cheap fix, just under £500 for both when mine went!!

Of the 4 new ones i've had fitted 2 failed within 2 weeks!

One of the reasons they fail is due to moisture on them which is caused by the heat exchanger (oil cooler) seals failing.

Mine failed and needed a re-build. Re-build will cost between £2500 and £3000 inc VAT.

You could always fit a 2nd hand AF33, plenty of them about, usually found next to the rocking horse poo infront of the hens teeth!

They are about £30-£40(each) for the sensors according to the specialist that did mine.

Doesnt sound good mate. I have seen so many mint vecs at my local breaker and every one has had an auto box that has killed itself and wrote off the car.
