Major Service

Hi, I recently purchased a 1.8 petrol with 50k (2002). The previous owner did not get is services regularly as he was put off by initially paying £250 for what was supposed to be a major service which took about 1hour to do.

So my questions and concerns are, should I do an oil and filter change myself to save on labour. Should I buy the parts myself from halfrauds and other parts places so all the mechanic needs to do is fit (although I have no idea what needs replacing during a major service).

Should I risk a main dealer to do the lot or stick to a local garage to do the lot (in the hope they do the same work as the dealer for half the price)?

Has anyone got a 1.8 petrol that has had a major service from a dealer / local garage / self?

I had a 2 yr service on my 1.8vvt back in Feb and that was £214 at a Vauxhall main dealer. It wasn't that Vauxhall garage I bought it from, but one close to work, and they collected it and returned it later all washed and hoovered out. The garage I bought it from were round about the same price.
