    Default Stupid MOT rule

If you take a car in with one month till it's due, you get 13 months.

Why, if you take a car with 13 months 1 day remaining can you only get 12 ?

Cos they've got to have a cut-off at some point. Otherwise where do you stop it? 14 months, 15 months.....? Far from being stupid, I think it is a good idea

I'm not saying you should get 14, 15 etc. But if if I do take it slightly over the 13 point, why can't I get 13 ?

Car was first registered 30 June 07. As I'm off tomorrow I thought I'd get the MOT out the way, and that way if they find anything there's still a months warrenty remaining. I was expecting a 13 month ticket....

If you went in and got 13 months, its the same as having the one month on your old MOT.....(if that makes any sense at all)??!?

Dont see an issue, sometime's wonder myself about this rule, but it does make sense, naturally if they started doing 13 months for all NEW MOT's and expired MOT's, then id have an issue.

I think im lost now! :thud: !

Because as I say, they HAVE to have a cut off at some point. It's like anything else in law/legislation etc. Age of sexual consent is 16, not 15 and 341 days, age for drinking is 18, not 17 and 360 days etc etc. Just the way it is, and it has to be that way really.

Please correct me if im mistaken but:

An MOT is only for 12months. However this causes an issue where, unless you re-book the MOT on the expiry date each year, you will have paid for the MOT but got under 12months. So I think, cleverly, they created an overlap period of 1 month. If you take your car within 1 month of the expiry date, your new re-test date will be 12months on from your current expiry date.

Obviously this needs a cut off point, and 1 month before your expiry date to book MOT/take it in/get repairs sorted, is MORE than enough time.

Yes frustrating for you mate, but an MOT should only be 12 months anyway!

If I am not mistaken this is your first MOT and will always therefore be 12 months you will only get upto 13 months on subsequent MOT's first 1 is 12 months as it says on the tin

Exactly! To maintain getting "13 month MOT's" you will have to re-test exactly every 12 months!!

Not what I was told. ( re first mot / 13 months )

Ah well - I think I'm living in the pre-computer world. I'm sure I took a repaired motor for a very early test to sell on and got 13 months when I was younger.....

Not so. As long as you take along your V5C when you go for your first MOT (as proof of date of first registration) you'll get up to 13 months MOT.

Have done so with my last 3 cars.
