Any domestic appliance engineers on here , need some advice please .

Got a bit of a problem with the tumble dryer at the moment , I've noticed a bit of a burning smell and the drum fails to turn when the cycle starts , although there is a buzzing noise from the motor.
So I've whipped the top and side panel off , and the cycle will start with a push of the drum , but as soon as it changes direction or there is an intermission , it just can't get started on it's own again .
The father in law says it will be the bushes or brushes in the motor , Can't remember which one he said lol .
If anyone can advise it would be greatly appreciated.
It's a hotpoint ctd85 condensor by the way.
And yes I have been very careful whilst fiddling lol , I know plenty about cars , but sadly not electric motors.

How is the drum driven?
Drive belt or jockey wheel?
You need to see if the drum is easy to turn when disconnected from the motor.
Burning smell could also be fluff in tubes or heater, which is usually on top of the drum.

Got the same problem I find I just turn the drum by hand and then it will rotate if we don,t do that it just sits and buzzes and get a nice burning smell.

I thought ours could be the belt slipping as the wet clothes are heavy and it runs fine once it is going

Thanks Tony , the drum is belt driven , all parts appear to be serviceable and in the correct place , it's pretty easy to turn by hand , then as mentioned the motor will take over after a push start , I'm just on youtube at the moment watching videos , pretty sure it's the carbon brushes , look a doddle to change as well .

whats the make and model sounds like the brushes replaced mine on my washing machine a few months back.

It's a hotpoint ctd85 condensor , been nothing but trouble since I bought it , but I can't justify paying £100 for someone to come and fit a £10 part in half an hour at the moment

if it turns freely, then it will most likely need a new set of carbon brushes, most available from fleabay.

sounds more like the capacitor on the motor has packed up.

These run with very high tension on the belt, due to no tensioning on the newer Hotpoint/Creda/Indesit Dryers.

Hopefully just the motor brushes, although the burning smell is worrying.

I've seen a couple of these with premature motor failure, thankfully minimal cases compared with the amount of these condenser dryers we sell!
