Default 3.0 V6, judder under light load

I noticed a slight judder on my 04 Signum Y30DT a while ago. Strangely it was only at around 50mph in fifth. But recently it's happening more often and at higher speeds and in other gears.

It's as if the engine's stuttering, not violently, but it's also "coughed" a few times at idle since it got worse.

Any ideas what it might be?

could be a lot of things,

Difficult to tell because it's so intermittent and happening rarely but it sounds like the engine is not getting enough of something air, fuel or a possible electrical fault.

I would firstly recommend you check the following:

Sparks plugs (good cond and clean)
Air Filter (not clogged with rubbish)
    Fuel Filter (not clogged)
Vacuum Hoses (for holes and splits)

    On a diesel?

Sounds to me like the dreaded blocked SCV
Get some fuel pump cleaner and fill the tank on next refill
This is only a temporary solution and the issue will get worse over the next 1000 miles
Eventually the fuel pump will not be able to cope with revs of 2000rpm to 4000rpm
The solution there is to run the engine at high revs, but by then it can become dangerous to drive the car as the fuel pump can cutoff at any time

If the EMS has been updated then it should return a fault code and put the engine straight into safe mode
However, sounds to me like it has not, so then nothing will happen as the fault code is unknown and will only put the engine into safe mode when the fuel pump is running at or below 30% flow rate (which can take at least a further 1000 miles from initial symptoms)

I suggest booking the car into a diesel specialist if the car is out of warranty
Ask them to check the output pressure ratings on the high pressure fuel pump, this will confirm if one or both of the SCV is blocked

    OK thanks, that's really helpful.

I've done some reading on this excellent forum and noticed other people's SCV symptoms are, to a large extent, very similar to mine. So fuel cleaner will be my next purchase to buy me some time.

Can anyone recommend a fuel cleaner? there's an injector cleaner on the Halfords website, will this have the desired effect? (sorry I'm no expert on these things)

Can I clarify that this problem may have been caused by diesel I've been putting in it? We use our local Esso petrol station and I've never put any low sulphur diesel in it. Am I going to start having to use additives from now on?

Has the car has its cambelt changed in the last 12 months?

Not "fuel cleaner", nor "injector cleaner", look for "fuel pump cleaner"
Be aware this product is NOT cheap, at about £12 for 500ml
The instructions should state use the entire contents of the bottle on one full tank of fuel, if it doesn't then it is NOT "fuel pump cleaner"

Yes the issue is caused by the change in lubricity of diesel in the UK
All diesel is "low sulphur" so the petrol companies no longer need to state this
Equally, the recent change to 8% bio-diesel hasn't helped, the lubricity has fallen again

There is NOTHING you can do as there are no suitable additive replacements
The only course of action is to fit the uprated SCV
Ask your local VX dealership for a copy of Field Remedy 1057 (I think thats the number so you may need to just ask for the Field Remedy relating to blocked SCV) and get a quote (not much change out of £1000)
The cambelt needs to come off, so worth replacing at the same time

I am currently disputing the change with BP and Shell, as they should still be supplying fuel that was supplied to forecourts in 2003 (as this is the fuel the engine is based on)
TESCO have refused to disclose information
The information I have from BP and Shell clearly shows that the % of lubricant has dropped, and I am awaiting a response on a suitable additive that can be used for this engine

You can change the SVC without removing the pump. I have a pair of SVC they have been fitted and done about 5k but are perfect.

I've only had it a few months and can't see any sign of a cambelt change. It's only done 35k and the SH is fairly comprehensive.

My Fiancee's just driven it for 90 miles and apparently it judders at around 50 and around 70, but doesn't mind 80ish or lower speeds. Very strange.

I'm tempted to put in some fuel pump cleaner anyway, see if it makes a temporary difference. I have a VX dealer nearby so will pop in and talk to them. I also have a very good independent mechanic I trust implicitly but he's dreading working on the Signum. I might get him a copy of the field remedy and see what he thinks.

    2004 on 35K miles, that's horrendously low (almost a waste of a 3.0 V6 CDTI) at 7K miles a year
The service interval is 30K miles / 2 years
So whats the service history like?

At between 2500rpm and 4000rpm, does it feel like the brakes are being applied, even though your foot is flat on the gas?
If so, then that would almost certainly confirm there is at least one blocked SCV
Dedending on how many miles you do, this will gradually get worse

On mine it took about 1000 miles, which seems to be the limit for other people as well
This had my dealership completely lost, as all they could work out was that a fault code was stored but it came back as "unknown error"
The VX area technician looked at the car and diagnosed the fault within a few minutes
However the parts were on back order and he suggested using "fuel pump cleaner", which worked for about 4 weeks
Eventually on mine the car wouldn't accelerate beyond 30mph as the EMS warning light came on, I took the car the following day back to the dealership, and was there for three days

You know what...It's not always SCVs that fail...

Check your tires and CV joints and replace the fuel filter, only then try the so-called fuel pump cleaner...If that fails, replace the SCVs.

I'm on my second V6 CDTi so I know what I'm on about.

I get this on my 1.9 CDTI 150, It judders ever so slightly at 1500 rpm.

Its noticeable on cruise control at 50 in 5th gear but only when the car has to climb. can also be felt at 30 in 3rd, again at 1500 rpm.

havent a clue what it is though sorry, but ive done 10k miles with it doing it and no trouble so far.
