Default Cycling at my age? I must be mad :D

In a concerted effort to try and lose some weight and get a bit fitter for the wedding and the future and as something both Amy and I have wanted to do for ages we bought push bikes last week and for the first time in 21 years I went cycling last night.

I have to say though it was very enjoyable, although hard work at times. We spent over an hour out on the bikes cycling through the local parks and woods and whilst thoroughly knackered at the end of it, actually felt quite good about the whole thing. Until this morning that is...

I thought my legs would probably hurt, surprisingly they don't, I thought my back would hurt, even more shocked that it doesn't, I thought my hips would hurt, to my surprise they don't, I suspected my arms would probably ache, and yet again, completely shocked that they don't.

What I didn't expect was that my ARSE would be KILLING ME!!! Jesus sodding christ on a bike, it feels like someone's rammed a 10 foot scaffold pole up my arse, I can barely sit down. What exactly is the point in having an expensive full suspension bike and nice arse shaped saddle, if it's still going to inflict pain like this.

I can only hope that with time my poor old bum gets "used" to the idea as "apparently" we're going out on the bikes again tonight and it's looking like this may be a long term deal.

I don't remember pain like this when I used to ride bikes all the time, am I just getting old or something?

invest in a good saddle. Its not about the padding but how you sit on it.
for my road bike I bought a selle italia gel flow.It looks like a razor blade but is extremely comfortable. They do a range for mountain bikes.I managed to get a brand new one off flea bay for £32.00,rrp £98.00.
p.s, after 60 miles you arse wil hurt whatever your sitting on but you will get fit and loose weight if you keep it up
I was 19 stone in 2008,I now weigh 12 3 but i really enjoy cycling which is the main point
If you enjoy it its much easier to continue doing any form of exercise

    You're only 38! Stop whining!

You're backside will get used to the saddle after a few rides. You should invest in some padded undies and as petel said maybe a new saddle.

I took my bike out for the first time in a few months and suffered the in same place (although I did 27 miles more than I was planning). Will probable take me a couple more rides for it not to hurt

    Happy riding.

Haha great writeup! Know exactly what you're talking about...it does get a lot better quite quickly, worry not. You're arse will get used to getting pounded and start to toughen up.

Heh, just been informed by Amy that we're going out again tonight, I may be a cripple by Monday at this rate.

Oh well, it'll all be worth it in the end... *keep telling yourself that Ian, keep telling yourself*

I'm not massively overweight at about 13.5 stone, but I'd like to lose two or three that's for sure and get rid of the belly. Not to mention 15 years of smoking (I stopped 8 years ago) so wanting to get a bit of fitness level back again so I'm not out of breath after going up stairs.

    Hi,
Know what you mean about the sore ass Cleaned my mountain bike up the other day, gave it all a good jetwash, cleared up the gunk out the cogs, then greased, siliconed and tightened everything up, but been busy since and not been out on it since I cleaned it
