    Default Starting problem

The last 3 of 4 times I've started the car its taken a good few seconds of turning the key before it finally starts, then it sounds a bit juddery and struggling a bit, a bit like when you switch the AC on and the engine power decreases. Starting to worry me

Doesn't matter if you use supermarket fuel or BP extra special Ultronian nuke fuel - it all meets BS/EN 228 (or BS/EN590 for diesel) which the manufacturers spend a fortune making sure that their engines work on. I know -we do a lot of the testing for the oil companies and the motor manufacturers. Some "premium" fuels have some minute quantities of additives (in the PPM range) which may or may not help improve combustion.

Buy the cheapest you can - it won't make a difference. Better still, do a shopping raid to calais on an empty tank and fill up with diesel over there. Johnny foreigner sells the same diesel as we do at about 2/3 the price - and you can stock up with beer..... Pity if you don't live in the south, us southern softies do have something going for us after all.

no offence, but i would disaggree mate and i'll tell you why. about 3 years ago my dad filled up at asda, started the car and black smoke everwhere until it conked out. called out the AA they couldn't fix it. took it to a ford garage(car was a puma) they were scratching there heads. then they drained the tank and put some fresh petrol in and hey-presto up and running. i looked on the net and read that supermarket fuel does not get the same amount of checks or addittives because it bulk bought and shipped out as such to the super markets. this may or may not be true but i would never put that cheap stuff through the second most exspensive thing after a house just to save about 50 pence. of course i cant prove or disprove this so each to their own but i always put shell in mine and sometimes optimax. years ago i used to put esso in but what ever happened to the esso garages??

Sounds a bit like a mixture problem to me david,

The poor running may also be caused by the same symptoms..

Best get it into a dealer and get it hooked up to tech2, as there's bound to be a small component failure somewhere..

If I use reg 95 the spanner light shows in the display in the rev counter when the ignition is turned on before the engine starts, but after filling with Optimax by the 2nd tankful this doesn't appear. Coincidence?

in a word probably yes. Shell especially are not going to repeat their earlier experiences of fuel blends and additives that wrecked quite a few Vectra B engines

I use Tesco's 99RON and find it superior to all other fuels I have tried, both Esso and BP premium SUL's make my car feel rough, Optimax does the job almost as well as T99RON but not quite. Before I switched and long before I had the car remapped, I used to use Morrisons standard fuel and never had any problems whatsoever.

As Mark suggests, there is more than likely a mechanical or electronics failure causing this than just the type of fuel you use. Duff fuel filter perhaps?

Not convinced as half a tank after putting the standard stuff in (only when can't find Optimax) on comes the warning light again the next time I start it up.
