    Default driving licence help

over the past year i have been building a corsa track/quater mile car , getting to the point soon where i will be needing to move the car (exhaust, mapping etc) and have been looking into getting a trailer, been looking at trailers like the following --

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BRIAN-JAMES-CLUBMAN-TWIN-AXLE-BRAKED-CAR-TRAILER-/290436308247?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&ha sh=item439f5a5d17

, looking into what licence i need and the info all over the internet is a bit confusing, i got my licence in feb2006 (am 21), the towing vehical will be my vectra c, and i will be towing a corsa b c20let(900kgish),

does anyone know 100% if i can tow it with the above trailor or will i need to do another part to my licence , thanks

You need to be careful your train weight cannot exceed 3500kgs which is the max on your licence, that is the weight of your vehicle and the plated weight of the trailer so if the vectra is say 1700kgs the max you can tow is 1800kgs. If your trailer is capable of carrying over 2 tonnes say you cant tow it because that exceeds the train weight. But you can't exceed the vehicles max towing limit either which you should find i your handbook or on the door pillar.

The DVLA web site does explain it all but it can be confusing as if the above isn't.

    Hope this helps a little.

    Vehicle : Facelift Insignia/Corsa D

    Engine : 2.0 cdti/1.6 Turbo

You can't tow a trailer that weighs more than the unladen weight of the vehicle and the max train weight (3500kg limit) is the gross vehicle weight plus the laden weight for the trailer

Fine example I can give is

    I have a Vectra 2.2DTi SRi.
    Unladen Weight: 1498kg
    Gross weight: 2015kg
    Max towing weight: 1500kg

This means that the most that I or anyone who passed their test after 1st January 1997 can tow with my car is 1435kg

I tow a caravan weighing 1250kg fully laden.

This means that my total train weight is 3265kg (well under the limit)

To tow anything else will require you to sit a B+E test (trailer licence)

thought so, been looking at doing the licence , but all the companys that do it say you have to use your own car and trailer, but on my licence i cant tow the trailer to ther lol

The DVLA make it nice and confusing because they love handing out their little £60 fines and claiming you should have read the small print.

How do they decide what the weight of the trailer is? could I be using a massive trailer and only have a chair in it which is well under the weight or is it that the trailer is capable of carrying 2ton and so I cannot tow it? got visions of me towing a tiny trailer stacked up with everything from the house a bit like on "The Beverly Hillbillies" albeit that was on the car.
