Default Direct Line vs Tesco Car Insurance

I think this is going to be a no brainer, but here goes anyway.

Currently with Direct Line and they've just sent my renewal quote through - £453 for my 2006 2.2 Auto Elite Vectra-C.

Have shopped around a bit (as you do) and Tesco have given me an online quote of £320.

I realise the £320 quote from Tesco will include an online discount, along with another discount for providing my club card details. Even without the clubcard it's 'still' only £360, which is nearly £100 cheaper than Direct Line. On top of that Tesco will give me a £25 voucher to spend in store or on fuel, and points to my clubcard. So a total saving of nearly £160 if I went with Tesco.

My question is, comparing Direct Line to Tesco, who would provide the best service in the event of a claim, etc?

I've previously made a couple of claims whilst with Direct Line for the past 8 years and their service has been faultless.

I've been told that Tesco use Direct Line anyway, so should I expect a simliar service?

I tried Chris Knott, but their quote was £400, and the policy excess in the event of a claim was a lot more than DL or Tesco, as well as a couple of other less favourable offers than I currently get with DL.

Haven't tried any of the comparison websites as previous use a couple of years ago ended up with loads of spam mail afterwards, despite ticking the boxes declining newsletters and the like.

Renewal price through the post as been with DL for the past 8 or 9 years.

I did an DL online quote as a comparison, and it was £380 to £400 (depending on what options I chose for hire car and voluntary excess, etc). But obviously the online quote will include a % discount, which I won't get as I'm an existing customer - tried that trick before.

Got £350 for mine 1.9 SR 150, proctected no claims bonus, £100 excess and the mrs got £290 for her Micra SR 160

You should definatley look at multi car if you can

I change insurance company's every year

Every year its the same story, when my renewal comes through the price is ridiculous so i shop around online.

Apparently when your a "new" customer you get a huge discount, then a discount on top for doing it all online

Last year my renewal came through at £410 yet after shopping online i managed to get me and the wife insured for £208

I recently had a price increase on my Direct Line renewal to £497 2004 2.2 Design. So I checked the price comparison sites (nothing special). I phoned Admiral - multi car £211 Fully comp PNC non multi car £250.

    Guess what I did

I just changed from DL to Tesco this month, saving of £80, and a good 30-40 quid cheaper than Chris Knott or Adrian Flux iirc.

Phoned DL 3 times to discuss my renewal, they couldnt budge. Tesco quote much cheaper, which always amuses me as they both belong to the same underwriters (RBS).

Tesco do offer multicar discount so the wife will most likely change over at her renewal.

My colleague busted his car the day of his honeymoon, and Tescos couldnt have been better at sorting out repair and courtesy car.

I mostly do the same, the introductory discounts by far outweigh the loyalty discounts for staying with the company. Got clobbered this year myself, wrote an Omega off last year, hadn't protected my no claims and they dropped me from 7+ NCB to 2yrs, doubled my insurance (£522 on 3 no fault accidents over 15 years @ 50+ years old) and excess. I checked around and got a sensible quote. May join my wife with the AA next year.
