Unhappy Non Start just clicking ...

This is frustrating went to Evan Hallshaw, St Albans to pick up a new boot/tailgate push button - yes, the thing would open on a 'as & when basis - went it wanted to'.

Any how went to restart the car and 'Click' 'Click' each time I turned the key to position 3, took key out locked and un-locked the car, No change - Click, Click

I placed the car in 3rd gear and rocked it - hopefully to free off the starter motor bendix (does it have one ?), key back in 'Click, Click' - not ammused.

One of the sales team gave me a push and it started, he then wanted to sell me an Insignia

The car drove OK from St Albans to Kings Langley ~8 miles, parked up at home had a coffee and went to go back out again 'Click, Click'

Battery is fully charged - showing 13.2v

I see that the Starter motor is covered by a heat shield, can I remove this and give it a 'tap' to free off the bendix/solenoid ?

the battery may be fully charged but when its under load it still may not have sufficient charge to start the vehicle .... would be worth checking that first before you start hitting things with hammers

    Thumbs up

With the good advice in mind I approached the issue with caution, gently removing the heat shield (2x torx bolts & 1 x 10mm nut) I examined the starter motor - all connections ok and secure.

    Tried again - 'Click, Click'

Then I gave the solenoid a little tap with the handle end of my ratchet (it's got a ribbed rubber sleeve on it) - tried again and 'Brum' it started.

I tried it again a number of times - probably 5 or 6 and each time it started lets hope it doesn't happen again

So I replaced the heat shield and then proceeded to fit the new boot release unit.

    A very productive 45 minutes.

Same thing happened to mine mate.

Negative terminal was brittle, it eventually snapped and stopped giving any charge to the starter.

If it's done it, it's likely to happen again at some point - usually caused by dirty contacts. You could strip it and clean the solenoid connections.

    Angry

The Gremlins came back to haunt me today not amused, went to go out and click ****** click the dam thing wouldn't turn over.

After about 3 mins & 30+ attempts of key in turn, key out, key in turn, key out
    it started

Anyone got an idea of how much a new starter motor is

    Cheers.

Euro car parts do a no name one for 89.30 and a bosch one for 118.85 (with a 117.50 surcharge for returning the old one) so total 236.35

I had this on a Renault 5 and took the motor off. I cleaned it all up and then greased it up. It worked perfect from then on. Might be worth an hour or so to dismantle and try.

    As above.

Clean up the connections on the starting motor before spending any money.
