Question V6 3.0 Cdti Fuel Consumption question

    Hi Guys,

I've just traded in my 03 Plate 2.2DTi Vectra Elite for a 55 Plate 3.0 Cdti V6 Elite. In my 2.2 I got on average between 35 and 40 mpg during city centre driving and when doing mostly motorway journeys I averaged at 50ish but when taking it steady obtained in excess of 60mpg.

I'm a bit concerned with my new car though as I filled up yesterday with my third tank of diesel since I got it and it had only averaged just over 26mpg getting 350 miles from about 52 litres. I'm conscious that I have been driving it quite hard (new toy and all!) so I decided to drive it VERY conservatively following my fill up, reset my 2nd trip computer and monitor my performance ... I've now driven about 80 miles (mostly clear motorway) driving in 5th at 30 on urban roads, changing up very early before the turbo kicks in and sitting at 70 in 6th on the motorway but my average fuel consumption is only reading 37 (and it took a hell of a long time to get up to that figure).

Whilst I didn't buy the car primarily for fuel economy, I am quite concerned at reading a few other peoples posts quoting close to Vauxhall's documented combined figure of 40(ish). I'd be grateful if anyone could tell me if what I'm getting is normal (also I suppose taking into account that I have got the climate AC pump on) and if not any suggestions as to where I might look to find the problem?

I have been considering the Plug and Play tuning box that a lot of people on vvox have spoken about from DieselTuner and I wonder if it's possible that something is already fitted or an ECU has already been re-mapped ... could I find that out easily and would that account for a serious drop in fuel economy?

    Thanks in advance

    Dave

Other ppl's quotes being the word here.

350 miles ain't bad for any V6 mate, dont go getting the jitters and taking it back for the dealer to look for what ain't there, brace yourself for 25 ish urban 35 ish mixed, see Vx book if you need anymore proof, they would say it did 45 mpg if it did, but they dont cos it doesn't.

What VV says, the 3.0 Litre is a tad thirsty for a diesel.

Tuning box I have one for sale to suit the 3.0 V6

Its just a matter of getting used to the way it likes to be drien to get te fuel economy.... I took over 10 months to be able to get more than 300 miles out of a tankful.... now I regularly get 350. (2.0 turbo)

You will fond that as you get used to the car it will improve.

    Cool

    I've got the 1.9 CDTi, and I get 40, +/- a couple of mpg.

    If i drive like a tw*t, i get 36, if i drive like me gran up the m6, i get 45.

Best i've ever seen on the trip comp is 55, but that was only for about a mile - downhill in 6th from the petrol station!!!

    Cheers for your replies guys,

Vauxhall quote 40.9 Combined, 54.3 Extra Urban and even 28.8 Urban which is why I was so worried at getting 26, but now I know thos figures are just lies I can move on and have fun again ... it really was quite painful driving so conservatively! Although I really do think 5th gear at 30 still with pull is very impressive!

Any ideas what a tuning box would do to my consumption?

    CDTI ...
Tuning box I have one for sale to suit the 3.0 V6
Is it one of the CR2 ones from the DieselTuner site? ... if not how difficult would it be to fit (and remove come MOT/Sale time) How much is it going for?

Nope mine is from Andrew @ DT-UK who was the developed the tuning box on his Vectra 3.0 CDTi V6. Now belongs to Martyn21

It is a CRD2 model completely digital and plugs on in about 5 mins. Very easy. Comes complete with the maps for 226bhp and around 380lb-s torque. Plus helps improve economy if you don't drive hard

£200 notes mate plus a bit of delivery

I get about 430miles from a tank(just above red line)and mines is the 3.0CDTi Auto with the latest tuning box from ****. Apart from the better fuel consumption imo the power increase is awesome. Recently took the box off as car was going into garage and ran for four days standard and only got 308miles so makes a big difference to me

Sounds great CDTi, I'm a complete newbie to tuning though so please forgive me if some of my questions seem a bit naive...

When you say it's completely digital and comes complete with Maps for x ... does that mean I can connect it to a laptop and tweak it myself? If so do I need special software/physical interfaces for my laptop?

Are there any down sides to adding a tuning box?

    Are they technically legal?

Is it OK to leave them on when going into a garage for say service or should they be removed?

Do I need to make any other mods after fitting (like bigger brake discs to stop for example! )

Also can I be cheeky and ask why you are selling it? Does it have everything it needs with it?

And one final cheeky question ... if I bought it from you would you mind if I came to collect it or met you in a convenient place so I could fit it there and you could tell me if I was doing something particularly stupid!

    All very exciting stuff!

    Dave
