Default Diesel sometimes burning too much?

    Hi all,

    I have a 56 plate 1.9 cdti 150 bhp on 66000 miles.

I noticed sometimes the mpg on instant would be rubbish, and when this happened it would smell at the back of car near exhaust of burning too much diesel. This has started doing it more now, if i turn key off then back on its ok for a while.

Obv im worried as this could be damaging something else?

Hoping someone has had this prob before?

    Thanks alot in advance

    James

Do you have a vectra estate? I think this may be the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) operating. I think there is a way to tell if the car has a DPF by checking a number in the drivers door sill (on the little vin plate thing). I think if the numbers in the box have 1.20 it means that the car has no DPF, but if it reads 0.50 then it has. I cannot be sure of the exact numbers but I know the 1.20 one means the car has no DPF. This info might narrow down your diagnosis

And turning it off midway through the cycle is bad for it... When they first put it on the cars they made the glow plug light flash when it was cleaning, but people were taking the cars into the garage thinking there was a problem so they changed the software and got rid of it. It may mention it in the manual somewhere...

    Hi,
Not 100% sure, but someone will correct me if I'm wrong I guess

DPF is a diesel particulate filter, basically scrubs the carbon out of the exhaust gases. Every so often it goes into a regenerate (I think its called) mode, which cleans the inside of the DPF to keep it functioning correctly. Not sure how it does it, but I remember reading about someone else mentioning their fuel economy dropped when it was going through the cleaning process.

Dont think it needs replacing in your case, just doing its job by the sounds of it

Might be doing it more often nowadays if you are doing smaller/shorter journeys so the engine isnt getting up to temperature, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that diesels are not really designed for short journeys, they need to be hot to function properly and efficiently

It cleans the soot off the filter by injecting more fuel into the engine/exhaust, raising the temeprature and literally burning it off. As above, long journeys are good for the engine, as well as the occasional thrash when fully warm. Yours sound to be working fine, but leave it to run it's full cycle if it starts. Takes about 10 minutes or so...

If you mean a 1.20 then no, you won't have one.

    Cars that have them are:

    Signums
    Vectra Estates
    Vectra Automatics
