    Default Aircon smells

Had the aircon on over the weekend and it stinks of old sweat! A quick search suggests that perhaps it needs cleaning out but I have absolutely no idea how to go about it or what I will need!?! Anyone done it themselves? how bigger job is it?

when was the last time you had the aircon on if it was a while ago you may just need to leave it running for a couple of hours, if you dont use it for a while when u first do there is always a stale smell

Pop into your local Aldi, they usually have that stuff in the offers aisle.

When I run the air-con I tend to have it on most of the journey, then for the last few mins I then turn it off for normal airfllow and find this seems to stop that smell especially for when getting back in the car the next morning.

Try running it on full heat - that may kill/dry any bacteria in the system causing the smell.

The best thing to do is leave a/c on permanently with the fan on 1 and just adjust the temp dial to suit throughout the year. This will keep the system lubricated and the car fresh and dry.

leaving the aircon on permanently will also help the profits of the oil companies by reducing your miles per gallon.

best advice is to run the aircon for about 20 minutes a month during the colder months, this helps keep the seals lubricated. also, if youre using it during the warmer months, turn it off a few miles from your destination, this will give the system time to drain, hopefully reducing the amount of stale smell you encounter.

i used the cleaner/freshener i got from aldi this afternoon, smells of citrus fruits. only time will tell if the stale smell has disappeared, i only used to get a slight musty smell after turning the aircon off.
