Default Any Previous Jag XJ6 N P R Reg owners out there?

    Looking at a weekend car

Jaguar XJ Straight 6 cylinder engine (These have less faults than the later V8's I have researched).

Rumours have it that maintained well, the engine is bulletproof (ahem allegededly not being run in till around 100000 mile plus). Better than a 1.9 CDTi then

I think the engines outlast the body, as the cars can rust.

Looking at an N Reg on mileage under 100k, XJ Sport. Can anyone tell me any ownership experiences or knowledge of these cars please?

I had a P Reg XJ Sport 3.2 Straight Six, Engines on them are absolutely bullet proof just check the service history to make sure its been looked after. It should have the "J" gate gearbox in it as well and these are also bullet proof again check the history to make sure its had oil changes as they will get lazy if neglected. Body wise its pretty much just wings and wheel arches to worry about the rest doesn't usually suffer too bad. The only other things to check are the diff (the only weak link in the drivetrain), suspension bushes on the back and the front springs. Other than that just the usual stuff really that you would normally check when buying a second hand car. Hope this helps.

The Jaguar X300 series were a great car, the 4.0 has electric control on the gearbox (ZF HP24) and gives better gear change than the 3.2 (XF HP22).

As stated, the diff can be noisy, not a nice job to change over. The rear suspension is mounted on two large metalstic bushes, A>Frame mounts, these are common to sag and give a harsh ride, not an MOT fail, so they often get mised.

On the engine, front pipe/ catalysts are prone to cracking, dealer price will be close to £1000. fitted.

Noise from the front of the engine on cold start will often be down to the upper timing chain tensioner, easy job to replace.

Electrics are generally ok, unless mucked about with, some modules have now dropped from production, so make sure that all toys work prior to purchase.

Take a walk on the wild side and go fore the vary rare 6.0 v12, fuel consumption will worse than the national debt (double figures on a good day) but what a car to drive.

I hope that ghe above is of use, send a pm if you need data specific to a particular car.

    Happy hunting.
