Default Audio CD Drive for CD70 Navi

    As the title suggests,

Anyone know where I may get hold of a replacement CD drive for my CD70 Navi... (It is a Siemens VDO unit from a 54 plate signum elegance)

It is just so unreliable...It has always been a little tempramental since we bought it second hand off Fleabay in 2006...it just seems a lot more reluctant to read CD's.
All the other functions like AM, FM radio, Sat Nav functions etc work perfectly.
I did try the drive from a CD30, but these are a different make, and the connectors and mounting lugs are all different.

I know that I will be asked, so I'll pre-empt..

It doesn't matter whether it is a copy disk, original CD, CD-R, CD+R etc. and it doesn't matter which make of disk and also the method used to make the backup disks.

The situation improves temporarily when I clean the CD drive the best I can.
I even blow an air-line (at reduced pressure) through the mechanism to clear any crud.
I assume it is just a worn lens sledge or something.

thought about getting a new laser head for it? or ask/pm Cristian for advice because I believe he knows his way around these things.

When my xbox360 drive died I just replaced the laser assembly for about £15 or so

My problem, is finding a compatible replacement drive or laser pick-up unit.

There are no useful details on the drive, from which I could get any supplier info.

I haven't tampered too much with it, as it does play about 1 in every 7 disks that I try in the unit. My luck being what it is, I would probably kill the drive completely with my bumbling!!

It mainly likes my Paul Weller - Days of Speed CD...(plays that without fail for some really odd reason).

Dependent upon any further responses, I may indeed PM Cristian later...he does indeed seem to be a class act when it comes to the CD70!!

There is a VDO Siemens approved repairer approx 3 miles from me, but they will want £45 just to look at it, and the parts and labour would be more!!

may be worth ringing them and asking how much a laser assembly is.. It shouldnt be the hardest thing to fit...

Indeed, I will give them a call tomorrow, or even pop in to the shop to enquire.

Also, Cristian must have read the thread as he has already PM'd me with a useful link for a webshop specialising in CD, DVD and Sat Nav drives for vehicles...

Prices for laser units start as low as 15 Euros...which sounds good to me!

Will do..my Nav unit is in and out of my Cav dash all the time, so no probs to whip it out again to get the drive and laser details for "Safe & Sound" in Droylsden in Manchester...(My local Siemens VDO and Daytona approved repairer).

Pentagon Vauxhall, Oldham recommended these guys to me, as they use Safe & Sound for their own repairs.

I had them checking the CD70 about 3 years ago, as I thought one of the audio channels on the amplification circuit had gone down.
They found no fault, and so returned it to me free of charge.

Turned out it was my driver's door speaker that was goosed (In the wife's Vectra at the time).

Will also follow up the lead offered to me by Cristian... damn, he's good!!

As I said, Cristian is damn good...

pointed me in the right direction of these...

I know it says CDR2005, but the part number is the same on my CD70 CD drive.

    Tell you what resulto is!!

When I dismantled my CD drive to get the codes off it, I also cleaned it all up.
It wasn't particularly dirty, but I just went round everything with a Q-Tip / Cotton bud.

I also carefully cleaned the laser lens and reassembled the CD drive back into the head-unit and the headunit back into the car...

The CD player is now working perfectly!! (for the last 4 days)

I had tried one of those proprietry CD lens cleaner discs, but this had never worked before.

It'll probably go belly up tomorrow, now I've said that
