    Default Power steering fault ?

All, can anyone tell me what runs the power steering pump on a 08 reg SRi 1.9 CDTi, is it belt / engine driven or is it run electrically / by the altenator ?

    Regards,
    Saxman.

Its not mine its my sisters, shes just rang me and said that when shes moving very slowly (i.e. Parking) she feels that the power steering is not as it should be / the steering is heavier that usual, I thought this may be due to a failing altenator but wasn't sure if the power steering pump on her car was mechanical or electrical, hence my question.

Thanks for the reply, do you agree that what shes describing is likely due to a failing altenator ?,

    Regards,
    Saxman.

Sounds like you need to use the remainder of the 3 yr warranty (providing less than 60,000 miles and serviced in accordance with what Vx recommend)

Could be low tyre pressures too.

Definately not low tyre pressures, car is covered under warranty, she just wanted to ask me what I thought before she goes to the main dealers tomorrow, she didn't want to make a fool of herself and wanted my thoughts on it, the reason I thought that it may be the altenator is that if the power steering was run electrically and the altenator was begining to fail, it would then be more evident at very low engine speed, for example as she says, when parking, if anyone has any more thoughts / ideas / comments, they would be much appreciated,

    Regards,
    Saxman.

IIRC, the alternator on the 1.9's is known for failing. It should however put the charge warning light on though.

Yes, the red warning light should come on long before any problems are noticed with the steering.

It doesn't sound like the altenator to me - if it's died and you're still driving, you get (one by one in quick succession): ABS light, engine management light, power steering light (and loss of), and flickering colour display. Eventually the display will go black and all the dials will freeze. If you stop you won't be able to start again and it's nigh-on impossible to steer.

You can check the voltage on the battery and the charge being put out by the altenator but, as it's under warranty, just take it in and tell them the symptoms of the low-speed steering issues and let them sort it out.
