I would think that it is quite severly under-powered for such a heavy car..
Add onto this all the emissions control parafinalia, and it will be quite gut-less.

In what way was the engine horrendous...just under-powered or noisey, unrefined with lots of vibration???

Oh dear. lots of revs for power was it, or was there just no power? Tbh I dont know why Vx bothered with a 1.8 for such a big car, it was never gonna be much kop. The only reason i can see is for the people who just wanna trundle into town and back.

Under certain conditions, all of the above...

The most power came at the bottom of the rev range actually, then drops off to nothing the higher up you go. In gear acceleration on the motorway is non-existant, although I am coming from a 3.0 diesel...

First and second gear are ok actually, but anything above that is pointless above about 30mph... So you may be right in your reasoning...

I drive a 1.8 clapped out 1994 Cavalier, which is much lighter than the Insignia, and to be honest...going from that to the wife's Vectra-C 1.9CDTI 150...
Well for the first few times I drove it, the difference in speed caused me to need spare under-crackers, as it is amazingly quick compared...

So your 3.0 CDTi would probably show twice as much difference....
I'd have to take nappy liners as well before driving a car with that size engine.!!

140 odd bhp, which is only slightly less than the 1.9 150, but no torque at all... I can still thrash it for a couple of weeks though...

Wait until the 1.8T arrives, apparently it's a peach! 200PS! If all is right from what I am hearing, the engine range for the Insignia will eventually consist of the following :-

    Petrol

1.6 16v 100PS (Ireland and Mainland Europe Only)
    1.6 Turbo 150PS (Replacing current 1.8)
    1.6 Turbo 180PS
    1.8 Turbo 200PS
    2.0 Turbo 220PS
2.8 Turbo 260PS (2010 MY has the exact same engine and turbo as the VXR)
    2.8 Turbo 325PS

    Diesel

2.0 CDTi 110PS (Mainland Europe Only)
    2.0 CDTi 130PS
    2.0 CDTi 160PS
2.0 BiTurbo 210PS (Figures to be confirmed)

The 1.8 Turbo is apparently all but finished. It should be an easy engine to produce as it is in effect the same as the 1.6T. If you look under the front of the cylinder head of ALL 1.6 Turbo's, the stamping states Z18 XER!! Yep, all the 1.6T's run the 1.8 cylinder head.

I think the biggest thing I miss is the mid-range torque. I've never driven a petrol turbo engine, so I don't know how they drive in comparison with a diesel, but I suspect my next car in several years will still be a high power diesel, probably the bi-turbo unless they produce a V6 version. I can imagine the 2.8 sounding amazing, just the fuel economy that would put me off..:Faint:
