    Default Brake Pad Wear Indicator

I thought all Vectra C's were equipped with a "front brake pad wear warning indicator" light on the instrument panel, yet my dealer tells me after servicing it that I need 2 new front pads, but the wear warning indicator hasnt come on or thrown up any warning messages. etc.

    whats the deal here??

There is one on the nearside, it only comes on (in my experience) when the pads are so low that it gets welded on to them forcing the dealer to break it. Mine got to about 50K miles before that happened, probably not the recommended time for a set of pads!

Could be on the way out, could have another 5k worth of wear. Bear in mind that dealers normally don't see Vectra's for up to 20k at a time, so they tend to be cautious about replacement parts like this. Also they like the smell of our ten pound notes!!

They might well last you another couple of months, but to be toatally sure you'll be getting your paws dirty I'm afraid!

just had another thought, is this "brake pad wear warning indicator" actually a dashboard warning light like the low oil level light, engine management dash light, etc. or is it a wear indicator on the actual brake pads themselves hence u wouldnt know you had worn pads unless you actually went and had a good look at your brakes??

It's a little plug thingy that sits in the caliper, next to the pads. When the pad gets low, the indicator rubs against the disc which brings up, in my experience, a little piture of a wheel with two broken lines either side in the bottom of the rev counter. If you have the trip computer that shows more than one function at once, then you will also get a message that comes up, similar to low washer fluid or bulb blown.

And this is a problem. My outer pads looked like they had a good few miles left, but the inner ones were knackered.

Like I say, you need to get your hands dirty I'm afraid!

or wear gloves! I am doing a job at the moment and the main contractor says we have to wear gloves.....anyway today I was splicing fibre optic so I took the gloves off as its small and fiddly...next thing I know is I'm told to put the gloves back on or leave site. It's Friday so guess what I did.

    Sorry for going off topic

ive had probs with my brake pad indicator, it comes on from time to time normaly when full lock on, however there is owt wrong with the pads all i can see is the connections get a bit of grot in them, a clean and spray with WD40 seems to sort them. Also cheek the seals on the connetions, any dampness can cause it to come on.

Dealers will say you need new pads at 50% wear, if the pads are low enough you will see the dash light, still got 2mm at that point as well, probably just after some quick bonus work.
