Default New Driveway Ordered.. Advice Please...

Can you help with building knowledge (or experience) on laying Concrete Driveways?

Company I am talking with said they will dig 8" down, 5" rubble compacted to 4" and then 4" concrete.

Does that sound right? any advice?

    >>> For those that are interested, here is more info,...

    I've ordered my new driveway.

Having looked at Block Paving and Concrete I've decided to go with Concrete as its less day to day maintenance.

I've also spoken with my local council and they have explained the Oct 2008 new rules, and that I dont need planning permission providing I have adequate run-off areas to permiable ground for water, which it will have (including drainage) so thats cool

Don't have it with too big a slab as this will result in it cracking.
Better to have a breather every six foot or so hth ....................

I have had block paving. With the intention of keeping it clean. But with the view that if any oil spoils any blocks, they can be removed and replaced with new ones.

You should be able to drive a tank over that when it sets. More than suitable for a driveway. There should be no problems for a long time if at all.

    Cool thanks John.

The contractor laughed when I mentioned jacking a 1600KG car on it.. he said it can withstand tons and tons of pressure so cars wont be a problem. Just lay down a bit of wood to stop it scratching the driveway.

    Just so I know..

Concrete is cheaper compared to Block Paving. The Wife and I, went for the option of Block Paving, very happy with it. Not had a problem with weeds or anything for that matter. We still very happy with it, still going strong after 3 years.

I ran a block paving company with a mate many years ago. They are solid the compacted rubble and 50mm of sand is like concrete. As I said to many customers if they put a sealant on it any oil will not soak ino the porous bricks.

Spoon the concrete I dug up out of my garden from an Old pathway/drive was 4" Only prob is concrete does crumble and break over many winters. My drive has started to do that now but well it has been laid for 20 years!
