    Default Speed and limits

While having a strong tendency to want to drive to the limits of my car and my own ability, over the years I've learnt excessive speed doesn't normally make a lot of difference to journey time.
I've had several trips to our vet, in Stone, over the last week, with a very poorly kitten. Good road for the Vec SRi, fast road, enough twisty bits to make it interesting, several 30, 40 and 50mph stretches in between the National speed bits.
I happily set cruise and steer the car, slow for the lower limit bits (all posted cameras), but keep running foul of people who find slowing down through villages etc unacceptable - I've had 4x4's trying to intimidate me in 30,mph sections, one pair of young men even tailgated me on a twisty bit while I was doing 60mph, no chance to overtake with a horsebox and a lorry in front.
They were so close all I could see was their windscreen and their faces, no bonnet or grill. They eventually overtook on solid white lines on the brow of a hill. Am I crazy or are they?

No m8 ive been driving 9 years and even I will say the roads are getting worse. I hate the tailgater - hate them, conversely though I have an equel dislike of dodders. You were sitting at the speed limit so they are the ****holes.

I always maintain that if you can keep your car within 10% under the limit or connot refrain from tailgating you shouldn't be in a car... period.

Just ignore it m8 it is clearly on your mind and as my dad says to me thats what they want... dont give in.

I know the situation well. I am often up for some spirited driving in the derestricted areas near me but always slow down for the limits or near houses. Others don't seem to appreciate this and seem to want to carry on! I once over took a lorry on an A-road only for him to sit on my tail all though the following thirty limit....

I just stick to the limit and try my best to ignore the fools tailgateing.

From reading that, can't understand why you think you may be at fault.
    No.
Tailgating = brain dead idiot behind the wheel. Exemplified by the wreckless overtaking manoeuvre shortly after as described.

This... and you leaving a gap and people pulling into it, wether its motorway or flying in the gap from a trunk road are my pet hates... you then have to ease of to leave a decent gap...

I cruise control everywhere TBH, and i'll happily confront anyone at then next set of lights if i can see there faces in my mirror

Never seen a horse box doing 60mph!!!

Anyhow they probably wanted a race, kids see a sporty looking car and if they have mates with them they nearly always go into "race mode".
Driving quickly attracts idiots in all types of vehicles though!
The way to handle aggressive tailgating 4x4's is to go fast into a tight bend and just touch the brake pedal enough to light up the brake lights.... They hit the brakes mid corner, unbalance that 4x4 monstrosity, **** themselves and then back the hell off.... Works everytime

I drive quite regularly on such roads and I literally do the speed limit the whole way, only slowing for tight bends.... But even a bend with a 35mph "recommendation", I'll take at 50+ as long as there aren't any junctions or farm gates around the corner.

Also, I often find I overtake slow drivers only to have them driving 2 inches from my rear end when I get to the next 30mph Village. These are possibly the MOST annoying drivers!

it works the other way as well, i get so annoyed with people doing half the speed limit, mainly on 60's i travel a lot of these roads every day and the amount of people that will sit at 30-40-50 but why not 60 ! i think the police should monitor these roads as i think these people are more dangerous than speeders by causing people to overtake, and you have the strange beasts that travel at a steady 40 and even speed up when they come off the 60 onto a 30 and go faster on the 30 than they were doing on the 60, a lot of strange people out there. Well thats my rant for the day, off to morrisons for my breakfast mmmmmmh.

Birchy63, yep drive slow on the 60 and if you overtake them once of the 60 they drive up your behind, what do they hope to acheive from this but i think this is the 40 mph beast in action, im telling you everyone watch out for it they drive at a constant 40 mph.
