    Default wiper linkage con!

recently my nearside wiper stopped working on my 04 vectra. yep! worn linkage. the local vx dealer informs me that you have to buy an all new improved linkage, plus a new "wiper motor" (cos' the old one wont fit) oh, and a "special" bolt that costs 50p? grand total= £180.50p, am i missing something here? so what did i do? i got out my trusty old tap & dye set is what i did, drilled and tapped the ball joints, greased it all up, put two small metric bolts with rubber washers in to stop the linkage falling off, hey presto! you know i'd quite happily buy the linkage, but hey, i'm not paying for a motor that i don't need... i guess that makes me £180 better off

Yep, Vauxhall hope that many owners are overwhelmed by the vehicle's complexity...and so they believe that most owners will pay for the "expert" at the dealership to fix.

The real expert is the owner who can think of a simple cheap method to facilitate a safe and reliable repair.
As you have found out, fixes of this nature are quite cheap and simple...for most people with a reasonable amount of mechanical / electrical understanding

It's the electronic modules that give most owners little option, but to be ripped off by the dealers.

Well done for saving yourself a massive wodge of cash...

Mine's just got an extra thick cable tie round it which has been on there for months now since the linkage came apart. Still works perfectly. If that cable tie breaks, I'll be coming up with a new miraculous fix for it, yep you guessed it, a new cable tie.

well done, you can imagine the amount of people who dont have the skill to bodge a job that get ripped off at the dealers, there is always a way to fix something.

It's also worth noting that if you did want to buy the new parts you don't need the new motor as the old one does fit! It's a mistake on EPC.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

    http://www.vectra-c.com/forum/showth...linkage+repair

That shows you how to remove the old one, then just drill and bolt the seperated ball joints.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

same happened to mine last year in a heavy downpour on the motorway, 3 free cable ties from work & a conservative 30 minutes later, when i arrived at work, and they were fixed. still going strong now, had it not been for this forum i would have bought a new linkage, instead the money i saved went towards a few mods.

Was this not a free of charge main dealer fix not so long ago.?
I think they have stopped doing it for free now but to offer it for free at some point kind of suggests that Vauxhall know very well about this problem.
May be worth a strongly worded letter to someone important.?
