    confused High Engine Temperature

    Hi All,

Within the last week, my 2004 1.9 cdti vectra has started to run hot very quickly. I can drive on local roads for 4-5 miles from a cold engine and it would get up to 90*c.

When driving on motorways, it'll hover around 90-95*c.

Before this week, the temperature was significantly lower and running as I would refer as 'normal'.

I've taken it to my local garage, they've had a look and said that nothing's wrong and Vectra's are 'known to do this'. I have nothing to worry about as the engine fan is kicking in.

I'm not convinced and am worried about the situation.

Can anyone offer any advice or suggestions?

    Thanks

    Paul

In general the Vectra does seem to take quite a while to warm up, yours might need a new thermostat?.

I know. I was going along the thought that a new thermostat might make it stay cooler longer. Does the inside of the car get warm quicker than it used to?.
Is there enought oil in the engine, and coolant in the cooling system. Both these might have an effect?. No doubt the garage checked these. Does the Turbo sound like it is working correctly.

So the inside doesn't get warmer than it usually does.

I've topped the coolant up the other day so there's pleanty. I've not checked the oil - I'll give that a check.

The Turbo sounds okay - doesn't sound like there's any issue with that

Agree with Ed. The thermostat may be stuck shut. It's not a normal vec traight for them to heat up quickly, diesels take even longer.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Okay - is there anything a non-techie can do to look at or check for with the thermostat?

Start it from cold and keep an eye on the water returning to the headder tank and the hot water in and out of the rad. Hot water will flow to the rad when the thermostat opens.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

    Hi Big Sig,

Sorry for perhaps the stupid questions but the header tank - is that the coolant tank?

If it's not where what/where is it and what would it look like?

    Thanks

    Paul

Yep. The header tank is the one on the bulkhead where you top it up with coolant.
