Rumble when changing up 1st - 2nd

Hi all,
I have noticed a bit of a rumble from the engine when changing up between first and second. It may be that it wants to be going a bit faster before changing, but I never noticed this on my old Vectra 03. The old Veccy would moan discreetly and with dignity if it didn't like the gear I was in, whereas my new 1.8 vvti seems to rumble deep down! Most noticeable when cold, no clutch judder. The new car seems to sound a bit more throaty, maybe a characteristic of the vvti??.
I don't make a habit of putting the engine under undue stress, but the old Vectra was a little more forgiving.
Its going into the dealer soon for them to investigate, plus a rattle from the engine compartment (like something loose) on start up, that goes when warm.
Also a poor spray job / lack of laquer on rear bumper.

What do you think the rumble is? My poor driving? Anyone else had it?

I think mitch's low revs thread has answered half of my questions. You obviously need to keep the revs up on this engine ! Not going mad after all, and not such a bad driver, lol.
