It depends on what you look for on a smartphone. I'm a strong believer that the best smartphones still those that run on Windows Mobile, simply because you will be able to find hundreds of thousands of applications compatible with Windows Mobile.

Microsoft is releasing Windows Phone 7 soon which will again bring Microsoft to the top of the list. I've attended to a conference in America last month where we were able to test Windows Phone 7 and I can tell you right now, that Android, Simbyan and even iPhone have nothing on Windows Phone 7.

iphone - expensive and new one coming out soon... tied to itunes - apples restrictions on apps...
i love my htc hero... just wish i'd waited for the desire which looks much better... a growing app store too and removable/replaceable battery/micro memory card... and cheaper than iphone

though every iphone owner i know is amazingly defensive about their phone being the best thing ever...

    That'll be the HTC Desire.

Of course, it does depend a little on what your most desired (sorry!) features are, but I've just spent a couple of weeks doing the research and am getting one next month when my Orange contract expires. It wins hands down and equals or beats the iPhone in nearly all areas.

If the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 came with Android 2.1 (possibly in Sep) then I might be pursuaded by the big screen and 8.1 Mp camera, though the Facebook/Twitter built-in apps are flawed and it doesn't have as many 'home' screens. If the HTC HD2 came with Windows mobile 7 (not 6.5) then I might be persuaded by the biggest screen on a smartphone (4.3") though that still won't change the non-friendly underlying file manager or two versions of browser to get round the lack of flash support in IE. The Nokia X6 fails in many areas and just doesn't feel nice in the hand.

Whilst the iPhone has a slick and intuitive interface, the largest selection of apps, and has become the "must have" trendy gadget (even though most people don't know the half of what it can do) it's made by Apple, which puts a lot of people off, and it's getting a bit old now and just doesn't cut it in some areas. OK, there's a new one on the cards sometime soon, which promises to up the game again, but you still won't be able to change the battery and it will still be made by Apple.

Also, you can get a Brodit car cradle for the Desire, which you can't for most of the others.

    HTC Desire by a mile.

You can get it on a total spend of around £480 if you look closely. I got mine on a 12 month contract 300mins, unl Txts, unl data, for £40. The equivalent iphone well cost you nearly double for a strangled device.

The Google Satnav is worth it ALONE, links with google earth and streetview ! as well as the 'Google Cloud' so can search for anything on your route, doesnt need postcodes just search for say "Sainsbury's Lincoln" and it will show you them all and nav you there !

The web browser is 2nd to none, full pages as you see on your laptop etc, can click any videos etc embedded in websites, go to the BBC website with someone on an iphone and laugh at the 'blank' spaces all over his page.

'Widgets' the Desire has full widget support, Widgets grab 'live' content from web sites so you don't have to visit them to stay up-to-date with the latest information. i.e I have facebook, twitter, Internet Bookmarks, bbc news, endgadget, weather and selected Stocks all updating LIVE on 1 of the 7 screens without having to load them individually or press an 'App'

Fast - NO LAG whatsoever, the 1ghz processor is amazing.

Live wallpapers - You dont have to have a picture or a blank black background on your screens, I have THIS make sure you feed them lol !

Micro USB charging- 1 charger type required anywhere now, the new industry standard connection, unlimited car docks/chargers. We now have 1 charger in house and 1 in each car that charges all 4 of our different phones.

Drop and drag - I have set up 'remote access' on my PC so no matter where I am in the world I connect my phone to ANY PC to transfer music/videos/pictures to/from phone.

I could go on and on but prob bored you all by now sry !
