Red face I may be leaving (opinions on a V6 freelander wanted)

Well as much as I love my Vec, it may have to go in the autumn time. I have decided I want to go back to my 4x4's again. (practicality more than anything)

I have been looking at the V6 Freelanders so does anyone have experience with them? I've dealt with the old 1.8's and their cylinder heads so kinda know my way around the car it's self. Just not so sure about the KV6 engine.

They also have the steptronic gearbox in them, is it any good? Comments appreciated

Pretty sure the KV6 has head gasket probs as well john. First dibs on your snowies if you do decide to go down the Freelander route please bud.

The V6's are a nightmare. Its basically the same engine as the rover 75 so the inlet manifold from the rover sorts that problem out - they have inlet manifold problems. the cam belt is about a 2 day job - get some quotes and the average comsumption is about 17mpg.

If you want a freelander get a 1.8!

My dad used to have a 1.8 and apart from a gear box fault (got a new one under warrenty) and the usual head gastket it was fine

Well thats blown the V6 out of the water altogether then lol. Wasn't too bothered about economy as I do very few miles but the whole reliability issue is a major drawback.

As I do all of my own work on the cars too I prefer to keep things simple and a 2 day cambelt change sounds like a real headache I could do without.

I'm not too keen on the 1.8 (although I know where I stand with one of those at least). I've also heard the usual horror stories about the TD4 so that just leaves the 2.0di and tbh I like my power so it would have to be remapped/boxed.

I had a TD4 for a few year no problems whatsoever.. I think all engines have horror stories, but the TD4 was said to be one of the better engines. I enjoyed driving the "gaylander" and wouldn't rule out going back to one myself.
