    Default would a dealer....

give a free quote for work required? i.e. my alarm and parking sensors are playing up, would they hook it up to their tech2, run a fault check, and tell me what is wrong and how much is it gonna cost.. or just want me to bring it in, and run the diagnostic which is all chargable work for them, while the tab gets bigger by the second. :-(

Nope, they'd charge you for the tech 2 session. Something in the region of £60

They shouldn't for a quote only
If a TECH2 is required then that charge is payable on completion of work

I've had loads of quotes and diagnosis work done, never had to pay for a TECH2 up front

A technician spending however long sat inside your car with a tech 2 console, trying to diagnose a fault, is still labour that has to be paid for from somewhere. If your local dealer swallows that cost, then all praise to them. Not many dealers would though. Mine wouldn't (well they would for me )

The dealership I use does, but that may be because they know me
However they make it VERY clear that if refuse the quote then you MAY be charged for the quote (and they even quote for the quote!)

I have been to other dealerships that simply refuse; no pay = no quote

A good question. I look at it from a point of view of my industry (veterinary surgeon) about people coming in telling me they know whats wrong with their pet and can i just give them antibiotics, no need to see it or charge for a checkover.

I simply ask them what bacteria is likely to be involved, what's their assessment of current bacteraemia, would they prefer a bacteriostatic or bacteriocidal drug, which generation of which class would be most effective and for how long.

Reminds me of the urban myth of plumber attending a broken boiler, smacks it with a hammer, charges £100. Shocked owner asks for a breakdown - 1) hitting boiler with hammer, 50p, 2) knowing where to hit it £99-50.

Try going into a lawyers and giving them a new pen, saying "I brought you ink, so there's no need to charge me today, just write down what you need"

From my point of view, i am trying to build a good relationship with my local (vec-c recommended) dealer, and hopefully in the future these favours will appear. I always make a point of mentioning this forum and pointing out my vec-c sticker, telling them they are currently on our 'good' list.

Diagnostics are diagnostics, someones time is someone time, much different from getting say, a service quote.

    Just my ha'pennys worth.

It's completely different though mate. You're giving a quote to have work done - not to have something diagnosed and fixed...

If they give you a diagnosis for free and tell you what's wrong, you go and try and and fix it, trash the engine in the process and then blame them, where would they stand?

They would also be doing themselves out of a job by giving you information to help you fix it and getting no money in return - it would be like you paying for all the parts to do someone's bathroom and only charging for the fitment...
