rolleyes My bodged 10bhp Vxr air box mod :)

This should really be listed under a 'How Not to do' section as it wasnt as neat as planned... however I was only armed with a drill, a really rough round file, and some overly rough sandpaper that was lying around in the shed...

Most people just get a 50mm bore to cut out a big fresh hole, however being based in Germany means theres too many 'Martars'? I think they are called which would of then used my Airbox as a home and probably chewed up my K&N lol.

So to overcome this.. I tried to mimic the Vxr cover thats fitted And it does feel a little happier to accelerate in the high rev range

Will this not just draw hot air from round the engine?

TBH it'a works on the VXR's so no reason it couldn't be done to every Vec C/Signum.

Do you notice an induction roar with this done?

Hmmm I wasnt sure... the exhaust is silenced to the max on the car.. soon to be fixed with a Miltek after my wedding in August... but if there was an increase of engine noise we are talking minimal. The turbo did seem to woosh louder though and the revs really did feel smoother at the top end.

I have a 2.8 V6 and its ****** hot in there lol... but tbh I think the extra hole is just a secondary aid.. and because of the bump in the box it is restricted a little more than the main intake..

So... the main intake will suck in a good percentage of the air unless the engine requires more in which case both will probably equal out.. but by then your doing a fair enough speed for cooler air to be brought in.

Still a bit gutted after owning a ford cougar V6 though... the roar on that was almost erotic! LOL! And once an induction kit was fitted... could be heard from miles away it was amazing.. Vx is way to sensible (and German) nowadays!

Never realised your motor was a turbo. Wouldn't do it to a non turbo.

No different to having a cone filter on still takes air from around the engine bay, and why not do it to a non turbo car? What ever car you drive more cool air = better cleaner burn = more power

I really wanted a cone filter however.. it was said that they actually lowered performance on my model.. I guess 100% air from the engine bay is too warm.. but having the extra air in to mix with the cool is a good enough ratio to feed the engine without changing the temperature drastically enough to affect performance.

Saying that... been googling heat soak a lot and although it would affect a car on a rolling road where the engine temperature and the air around it is high, surely when your moving aslong as theres plenty of air flow to the air filter it shouldnt have any affect?

turbo cars have intercooler to cool the air before it goes into the engine. so you do get cold air. drawing hot air from round the engine is pointless on a non turbo. hot air is less dense.
