Default Quicky! Rear pads, is it the inner or outer with spring?

    Hi guys,

My outer pad started rattling on the rear at weekend, it looks like it has too much movement up and down. I remember when fitting my rear pads, on one pair there was a spring on the top edge of the pad, where as on the rattling neither inner or out pad has the spring.

Without stripping down the other side too look, could some one please tell me if the inner or the outer which has it? And what is its purpose?

Looking at my outer pad, there is a good 1mm too much up & down movement. Ive made a little brass shim which works ok for now, but i think i will buy new pads later...

    Cheers

    Mike

Presume you mean his spring -

If so this one sits against piston on the inside of the caliper. There should be some relief grooves in the piston to accept the spring.

The new type of pad has the springs next to the piston. Check out this thread, explains everything http://www.vectra-c.com/forum/showth...t=67661&page=4

    Thanks guys,

Yes its this one to which im referring! It goes on the inside piston i see! Whats wierd is thats missing from my inner pad, and is supposed to be the anti rattle spring! however, its my outer pad that was rattling... go figure??

Which pads did you fit, the new design or the old? The new pads have two with springs and two without. As stated the spring pads go next to the piston. With the sliding caliper it is only this pad that slides, the outer pad doesn't move relative to the caliper. HTH

I fitted the new design, with the spring on the outer edge. But the spring has snapped of the inner pad on the passenger side... but its fine, its not rattling! Its the outer pad on the passenger side which is rattling, its as though pad is ever so slightly too small for the slots it sits in, and as such rattles up and down?

The inner pad is sprung so that when the caliper piston releases after braking, the pads and discs stay "sandwiched" together which prevents rattling. If the spring has snapped I think thats your problem. HTH

Just to complicate things, I recently bought a set of rear discs and pads from vauxhall
part No V0093186300 and there are no springs on any of the pads. Price was £52.20 +vat using trade club.
    The car is 1.9 cdti.
