    Default engine noise when revving..

please give some advice , i noticed today that my car a 1.8 05 z18xe engine 40k, was making a loud ticking noise when i was driving it , i pulled over popped bonnet and had my partner rev it, it sounds like its coming from the rear left as you look at car , it gets quite loud the harder its revved , i had my ear on the engine and dont think its coming from that, sounds down past the timing belt cover (ish) any ideas as im booking it in at garage and want a slight clue....timing belt kit was done 2 weeks ago..

Was the belt changed only or full kit? i reckon either the water pump or the tensioners has been over set their for the locating lug is rocking back and forth under load against the block..see this alot.
where did you get the belt done about?

hi mate and thanks for the quick reply, i had the belt kit changed at local garage and i also told them they could change the waterpump but they told me pump was fine and never needed replacing (shocked me considering it was more money to them), i dont think i heard it making the noise pre belt change however im not sure , but i had my ear on the belt cover and engine cover and i can hear it whirring but not the rattle....but it sounds like the alternator area ....strange ....

Is the alternator belt flapping about when the engine is running? Colud be the clutch pulley on the alternator.

hi , took the car to a mechanic who had a five minute look at the car , he reckons its an idler in the timing case thats hitting the plastic, told me the belt has to be put on a certain way round tensioners etc and if done wrong this is the type of problem you get , said he has seen it and heard it before, he said to take it back to garage that changed belt...

Its good practice to have the pump changed at the same time mate as the pump has done the same milage as the belt/rollers retensioning a new belt on the old pump only make the pump weak! never heard of the belt being fitted the wrong way before but then everydays a school day. maye that the timing covers arnt securely fitted back on and rubbing a idler. best idea is take it to a garage as we could be guessing all day and its hard to put it down to ne individual item without seeing it..
good luck and let us know!

    update...

car went back to garage who replaced timing kit ...the garage were very helpful and had the problem sorted free of charge very quickly, turns out it was the bottom pully catching the timing belt casing..!

i could only see pound signs because the noise this was making was unreal, lesson learnt...thanks for response people.
