    Default Squeeling brakes

I had new mtec drilled + grooved discs fitted with pads about 2 months back (pads were from ebay, they have no gap in the centre of the pad)

Since fitting, the brakes have squeeled, really loudly, i thought it might bed in and stop

The garage that fitted them said it was the pads (faulty) and i should get new ones, he also said he would try re-greasing but would charge so i basically said eff off

Can it just be down to crappy pads that i've bought? It doesn't really make much noise at speeds over 40ish

Have you tried taking the pads out, cleaning the carrier with a wire brush/emery paper, then copper slip the pads on the edges where they meet the carriers and on the back of the pad? Usually shuts them up either that or its mickey mouse pads.

I replaced my pads and discs on my megane but got them cheap off the net. The pads didn't have any shims on the back of them and it began to squeal like a ***** after a few miles.

For those who dont know, shims are a kind of pad on the back of the brake pad. On really old cars you used to have to buy them separately but these days manufacturers glue/weld them on the back of the pads. Its made out of a softer metal or sometimes a hard rubber and this is what the brake piston pushes into. its stops the piston and pad vibrating under braking which causes a squeal noise.

I took the pads off again and put a bit of copper grease on them and it stopped the squealing for a week but it eventually came back. In the end I bought Genuine Renault Pads with the shims on the back and it cured it instantly.

I would take your pads off and look at the back of them. If they dont have any shims then you'd be best binning them and getting a pair that does have them.

as above a noise supression shim (spring) will help remove the resonance from braking and the squeal which should only occur under light braking

another option is to remove the pad and chamfer the edges so that the pad has a smaller surface and this will hopefully increase surface pressure under braking and reduce the noise

this is a problem with most brake pad /disc manufacturers now as they have removed the asbestos that used to help lubricate the friction caused by braking and now there is just a higher concentration of metal on metal
