Cdti boost gauge fitting help

Hi all I am going to be fitting a mechanical boost gauge

Question is if I drill a small hole on the rubber boost pipe from intercooler to inlet manifold on my 150cdti and push in the barbed t peice very tight then seal it with rubber glue will this be ok to run with also where is the best place to feed the vacuum tube to the drivers side dash mount

Also is there not a vacuum pipe I can splice it into on the turbo or does it have to be the big rubber boost pipe thhanks

there will be a small vacume pipe somewhere if you put it on the large pipe if it ever pops out the car will go in to limp mode

The small pipes don't actually carry boost pressure, they are control hoses for the wastegate and carry a vacuum. If you tap into them, you won't actually measure the boost pressure.

Ideally, the adaptor to connect the gauge hose to should be screwed into a metal part of the intake manifold. This may mean dismantling parts and meticulously cleaning out any swarf resulting from the drilling and tapping of the hole.

So thats why a gauge never sits at 0 then... Learn something new everyday

Not in a diesel engine. There is no throttle valve in a diesel inlet tract as there is on a petrol engine, so a vacuum cannot be created as the whole inlet system up to the intake valves is essentially open to atmosphere.

The only caveat to this is on modern diesel engines which feature a motor controlled throttle flap which closes when the ignition is switched off. This is to strangle the engine and reduce vibration as it comes to a stop. A vacuum would be briefly created in the intake manifold in this instance.

My original statement is still correct in relation to the OP's question - you cannot measure manifold boost pressure by tapping the gauge into the small vacuum control pipes connecting to the turbo wastegate or boost control solenoid. You will only ever measure varying levels of vacuum.

When I fitted my gauge I dismantaled the front end of the car and removed the plastic intercooler pipe, drilled a 8th BSP tread to fit a brass take off that I got from Demon Tweaks, blow out all the swalf before refitting Have a look here think you'll need page two! HTH
