    Default car not working!!

    went out to my car this afternoon after using it last night only to find that it is completly dead does anyone know what could have caused it and what i can do to get it to work??

    Probably the battery has failed.

    Or the alternator... My car was similar - central locking worked but not enough power to start the car. I charged it and it seemed OK but a couple of starts later was pretty much flat again.

    Note that if your alternator isn't working and you run the battery down you'll find it hard to drive - there won't be enough charge to run the lights, the power steering will fail, etc etc etc. This is what happened to me. Was a pretty hairy drive home :-/

    If you have a multimeter you can get more of an idea by measuring the voltage across the battery (see here: http://www.carbasics.co.uk/How_to_te...alternator.htm).

    Getting an independent garage to replace the alternator in my 1.9 150 with a reconditioned one cost around £300 for me (March 2010), I guess if it's the battery that could be nearer £50-£100 or so.
