Default 2.2 Direct engine - any happy campers?

    Hi guys,

I'm about to press the button on the purchase of a 2004 Signum Design, with the 2.2 Direct petrol engine (32k on the clock, FSH).

I've read about the Watchdog investigation and other threads here about problems with the fuel pump/regulator, and read about Vauxhall's new (alleged and low-key) recall to replace the regulators on certain cars.

My question is this - who here on the forum who has owned a 2.2 Direct for some time WITHOUT any issues? Is this engine a real lemon, or does all this negative noise on the internet represent only a small percentage of actual cars on the road?

    Cheers.

First off, get the car. Second, you wont regret owning it. Third, everything you've read about the fuel pressure regulator/pumps is true, I know 'cos I've replaced two in the three years I've owned my 2.2 Direct.

The first pump failed 10 days after picking up the 2.2 Direct (6000k on the clock when I bought it) and was replaced under warranty. The second pump failed three years later (36000k on the clock, about two months ago) and cost 156 quid all-in to replace.

It's a very, very 'small' chink in what I and many on this forum would argue is superb engine. In my experience it's been the 'only' problem I've had with this engine.

I have had 56K of trouble free miles including 2 journeys to France and its been the most solid car I have owned however after 56k and some very hard driving the fuel pump finally gave up 2 weeks ago and bought a new pump for £380 a continental one since then its been running like a dream again cant fault it.

and to put it to the test once again im driving to Lake Garda at the end of June in it

I've had a new fuel pump & regulator fitted. Failed with 3 weeks of warranty left and the car had done something like 40,000 miles.

Just had the camchain tensioner fail at 49,000 miles. New tensioner & chain fitted.

My previous 2.2 (53 reg, non direct injection engine) never missed a beat until I wrote it off (Cat D). Some guy bought it and put it back on the road and checking on DVLA shows it's still on the road.

Its a great machine. Had mine 5 years & 56K miles.
Have had that one problem with the engine and that was the fuel pump /regulator but this is very simple to avoid - replace them with the updated items.
