    Default Emissions warning light

Some time ago now I posted on here that my emissions warning light had reared it's ugly head....

After calling into the dealers for advice, I was told if it was running ok, then leave it until the next service.

Well, I have to report that the dreaded light is still on, and the car is running a LOT better than it has ever done, it does more to the gallon (at least 200 miles to half a tank, around town) and it feels more powerful and responsive! MPG prior to the light coming on was about 180 miles per half tank, not a huge difference I know, but still better. I always fill my car when it gets down to half.

So, what's the deal here with the emissions light? My Veccy is due it's service in August but I am seriously considering taking it to my (trusted) local garage for him to do the business. The only concern I have is that my car has an extra years warranty on it from Perry's, will this be affected, and what about part ex values, you what dealers are like? I will instruct him to use only Vauxhall parts, if needed.

I won't fill the pockets of dealers on principal due to high prices designed to relieve customers of hard earned cash when I know some garages can do a lot better job, for half the money!

It just perplexes me that the car will run loads better with a warning light on!

I wonder if it is running "weak/lean" hence the light coming on as it may be reading that it is "out of tolerance". Daft as it may sound I had a ford with a caruretter years ago and it would only run proporly if it was set to a more of a lean mixture.

have you had the code read yet to see what fault it throughs up? Mine has been doing this also with p0420 code which is emmissions out of threshold like Ed' said. Doesn't feel much different to drive and mpg is still ok.

As long as the garage you go to is vat registered you shouldn't have a problem regarding your warranty, My mum had the extra warranty on her focus and its cost her for 2 services so far coz I cant touch it til January when the warranty runs out as I'm not vat registered.
As for the light if its running alright and you're happy with it as it is I'd just get the code read to make sure its not something that could fail an mot (lambda sensors etc) and leave it alone til you want to sell it then worry about it.

Thanks for the replies. The garage it will be going to is VAT registered, and a member of the good garage scheme, they also have a very good reputation. The owner is also very strict on quality of workmanship too and rules his mechanics with a rod of iron!

I haven't had the codes read yet as I'm now working nights so no time. However the better half's car is in for MOT tomorrow morning at the aforementioned garage so I'll mention it and see what he says.

When I finally get round to getting the codes read I'll post the outcome on here.

    Cheers

The emission light came on on my company car (1.9 tdci) and although the car was running fine, though possibly slightly higher fuel consumpsion, the garage replaced the glow plugs and the exhaust gas recycling valve, apparently the glow plugs stay on to ensure complete combustion evan after the engine has started

that happened to me on my 1.9 CDTI 150 and turned out it was running beter because the EGR was knakard the system was bypassing it and it ran better but got a brand new (but from a scrappy) EGR for £100 sorted the light but made no differnce to the performance The fault code was EGR flow malfunction
