Default Learning to play the guitar

I,ve decided to learn how to play the guitar (Retiring from MMA soon after my last fight as joints giving me grief ) so decided to learn how to play as its something I,ve always wanted to do.

After a week of playing with blisters on my finger tips I,ve managed to string together a few chords, although the gf says her ears are bleeding these days

Anyone got any tips or recommend any good books? I,ve been using guitar for dummys and lick libary accoustic for beginners

I learnt to play guitar years ago and reached a decent standard. Enough to join a group and play in pubs, clubs etc. Last November having not played for some time I bought a new Stratocaster and took some proper lessons. That would be my advice. I learnt more and made more progress in a few months than I did over 10 years.

I'm quite shocked how well I can play now. That's down to a good teacher.

It's worth going to your local music shop and browsing through the tuition books as each one is different, and by looking through them you can see which one appeals to you. Although they all teach you the same thing, they have slightly different ways of doing so. Some jump straight into playing songs, others teach more about the rudiments of music, so get one that you think you may like. Some also come with audio cd's and dvd's to help you to learn, and also give you a guide as to what you're doing is correct. Also, you can always check on youtube to see if there are any videos giving you basic lessons, though they may be a bit difficult to follow. You can also get 3 chord songbooks which just let you play a selection of songs using 3 basic chords, so that will get you used to the chord changes etc. As for the blisters, thats normal when you first start to play. Eventually your skin will toughen up, and it won't hurt at all to play the guitar, just keep going! Also, it may be worth having the music shop "set-up" the guitar for you, and have the action lowered if possible. If the shop doesn't offer this, then you will need a guitar repairer / luthier to do this. Basically it will lower the strings on the guitar, and make it easier to play, or play at the best the guitar will allow, should cost around £20-£30 for a setup, and is very well worth doing. Sorry for the long answer, but hope that helps.

BTW, I know you're in norfolk, but if you're ever around the bedfordshire area I'd be happy to take a look at your guitar and see if the action can be lowered at all as I setup guitars myself.

    Thumbs up

Tip to help you learn, Youtube. Just type in all the songs you want to learn - Wish You Were Here acoustic cover... for example... or how to play...

Get your self a capo, loads of fun...

    Good luck,

I started 3 years ago and still bad. I would second youtube to get you started. Virtually every song you can think of is on there.

i third youtube as a massive learning resource, getting a capo is another great suggestion as it enables you to play songs in familer chord shapes.
