    Default battery light

    Chaps,

Just wanting to confirm something with you. Out driving down the bypass tonight my battery light came on the dash. Got multimeter across the battery terminals, when battery only its reading 11.8v, when engine running it's reading 11.5v, am I right in saying my alternator is on the way out? (rather than it being the battery)?

    Thanks

Looks that way mate get along to kwik fit and get them to test the battery just to make sure, batteries can load the alternator if they have cells down, cheaper option anyway.

    will do

If it does need replaced, I looked at the how-2 and would give it a shot myself, but nervous about touching belts, how easy are belts to refit after removal?

Also, am I ok to drive it still or am I likely to conk out somewhere?

Once the tensioners are loose it is fairly simple as it is for taking it off

Less than 12v at battery I'd suspect a cell down. Best get both checked. You have to take belts off to change battery? I thought the headlight bulbs were crazy!

belts off to change alternator, not battery lol. I'm thinking it is the Alternator because I think I have the flatspot below 2000rpm mentioned here:

Euro Car Parts list 4 different alternators though

Probably a selection of current ratings available.

Most common one is 100A. The rating is usually printed on the black plastic rear cover, or engraved somewhere on the casing of the alternator.

Interesting link, yes, electronic ignitions would be affected by low volts as well as everything else. Good luck with it, hope you get it sorted. I always check the cheapest thing first lol. Had an AA patrol tell me once I "had" to have a new alternator. I asked if the wire hanging off underneath was related - it was, new connector, fixed. £100 fault down to 10p one.
