    Default Squealing Noise from drive belt area

    Usually on cold and goes away after warmed up, does not change with revving the engine (if anything it gets a bit quieter), makes no difference if there is load on the alternator (heaters, blowers, radio etc etc) and does not change when the aircon is put on.

    Does not sound like it is the timing belt / rollers / water pump, it sounds like it is on the 'outside'

    Any clues or am I best going to a garage and pay for an investigation?!

    I initially thought the alternator but the bearing is still tight and the charge is still normal.

    Sounds like the multi V belt to me.. I bought a new one for about £8 and fitted it myself (with a little help from the neighbour), was about a 5 min job..

    Multi V belt? Is that the one that goes round the alternator?

    yes mate.. sometimes the alternator pulley needs changing as well to a superceeded one (made by bosch). But start with the belt first, its very common problem..

    While its running have a look at the belt itself with a torch etc and see if its flapping around, if it is then it could be one of three things, either the clutch pulley on the alternator is knackered or the tensioner is knackered or it could just be a worn belt, if it turns out to be either of the first two i'd fit a new belt as well, as all the flapping around could have stretched it. Hope this helps.
