Default Newbie here with timing chain issue

    Hi All

Newbie here, i have just sent my siggy ( auto ) in to my local Vx dealer, as

1, I am having slow acceleration
2, The revs seem to be skipping, on the flat @70 revs are steady at 2500rpm then for no reason it jumps to 3500rpm fora few seconds then resumes at 2500rpm.

The dealer has changed the fuel sensor and it wasnt that, he is now saying the timing chain is like a skipping rope ( fortunately it hasnt snapped ) and is due to change this.

Can any one sort of give an approx of what I SHOULD pay, as im getting concerned as ive read stuff that if the valves are damaged im looking at a new engine ( that i cannot afford ) also that it takes 8-9 hours to change the chain, is this right.

    My siggy has done 41000k

cheers in advance for any guidance and help

    Sion

I don't think you should pay, as it's still under warrantee? Whats year is it? As less than 60K and 3 years it should be.
I also doubt the chain comment, as unless it jumps on all the gears at the same time, then the valves would be goosed and there would have been engine damage.
It also doesn't take 9 hrs to change the chain... More like 3hrs (if that)

I may be wrong, but think youre been spun a yarn by the dealer.

I'm sure people more in the know than me will comment.

    Cheers.

D'oh left that bit out its a 55 plate,so warranty out the window.

Dealer said hes changing the timing chain first to see if any damage to the valves.

What prompted the visit was the symptoms in first post, also the fact that it wouldnt start and when it did it sounded like a diesel for about ten seconds then settled down, then i couldnt start it the folowing morning ( had to get jumped to get it to dealer ).

Also, aint that mechanically minded so laymans terms would be great cheers

Sounds like another tensioner failure. The chain tensioner works off of oil pressure, so starting seams to be the crunch time rather than driving as there's no oil pressure. the chain jumps and puts the timing out, sometimes to a degree of valves hitting pistons and sometimes just so out of time it doesn't start.

Don't totally dismiss Vauxhall paying for some of the repair. I've got an 06 2.2 Vectra and the tensioner failed at 49,000 miles. Granted it was making an occasional noise prior to that and fortunately it was noted down while the car was still in warranty.

It's also a known issue that the tensioner can fail. There is a field remedy that advises to fit the tensioner from the 2.0 turbo engine.

Here's my thread about it. It might be of some help to you in getting Vauxhall to give you a goodwill gesture. A lot of it depends on how good your dealer is and whether they're prepared to help you or not.

Autodata says 3.7 hours to change the timing chain on yours matey so the dealer is trying to have your pants down, tell them to p**s off if they try and charge you for 8-9 hours. They must think we were all born yesterday lol.
