Unhappy Help!! Problem with front disc and pad contact.

Hi folks.... I replaced discs and pads all round about a thousand miles ago and have had an ongoing problem with the front nearside disc ever since.

Basically the pad is not making full contact with about 3/4 of an inch of the visible disc face nearest the hub. It has a slight coating of rust whereas the rest is nice and polished by the pad.

I did a little detective work by pushing the piston back into the caliper and noticed some side to side play on the caliper coming from the slides. Not much but I think it's a bit excessive. The pads are nice and free in the caliper and not jammed at all as is the piston (Or at least it seems so).

Could this be enough to stop the caliper staying true when braking causing uneven contact with the pad and disc?

When I said side to side play on the caliper slides I meant placing my hand on the top and 'rocking' the caliper inboard/outboard not sliding it if that makes sense.

I thought they should be bedded in by 1000 miles unless you are very light on the brake. Did you use a decent make of pad, very hard compound maybe? Are the pads perfectly flat? Are both sides of the disc affected? Try removing pad and rubbing it on a fine wet & dry on a flat surface to ensure it is perfectly flat.

    Thumbs up

I have to say that they weren't the most expensive discs and pads on the market however they do appear perfectly flat. I'm not that light on the brakes and I have towed my caravan for 200 of the 1000 miles they have been on for. I might go for a strip down and sand as you say.. will have a look at the inner side of the disc tonight.
I was thinking of swapping discs and pads over from the other side?

Thanks for replying by the way tridley!!

Just for info really if anyone's interested... I sussed the problem I have been having with uneven contact between discs and pads. It was a simple matter of relocating the retaining spring on the caliper as I think I hadn't replaced it correctly on reassembly!
