    Default Puncture Repair

Had a nail in nearside front tyre it was down 2 20 psi, only option was kwik fit. walked in and asked how much for repair, was told £19 was about to walk out and guy said ok i'll do it for £10. thats more like it. All good now, he repaired it by drilling tyre and putting in a rubber plug, never seen that before

I took a wheel into KF a few years back to have a puncture sorted - the 'mechanic' attacked the inside of the tyre with a wire brush, applied the vulcanising solution & slapped a patch straight on the tyre & started rolling it.

Having read the instructions pinned to the wall while he was messing about I pointed out they they specify a 20 minute wait while the solution cures - he replied something to the effect 'Yea, we don't do that - you don't need it' - I took my wheels & tyre off him & went elsewhere

Do you mean a external plug, which are pushed in from the outside. ?

If so they were made illegal in the UK sometime ago. You can still buy those kits for a tempory repair, but technically they are illegal in the UK.
The tyre needs to come off so a proper vulcanised plug can be secured from the inside which wont blow out.

We used to use those external plugs years ago, but due to the fact they can blow out, they were banned in the UK.. though they are legal for off-road use.

£19 for a puncture repair and wheel balance does'nt sound too expensive to me, Think I paid about £17.50 for one to be repaired about 3 years ago.

I'm glad I dont live around your way, if you asked that much around here people would first fall about laughing at you before walking off and taking their custom somewhere else.

£10 is a far price, given that is normally the price for refitting a tyre, balancing per tyre, etc., based on the time taken

I was given some vouchers for puncture repairs at National Tyres
I am slowly using them up, as when the published that batch they accidently did not put a date on them (should have been 12 months)!

Doesn't that effect the speed rating of the tyre as its no longer up to the same standards as when it left the factory? IE down to 70mph???

there is a small oval peice of rubber like a bottle cork protuding from tyre, i asked the guy what it was and he said they are a lot longer before they trim them. surely they would't do this if it was illegal.
