I would advise that you look in the Haynes manual (Vectra one would do) for the procedure required to change the fluid in the AF40 autobox as its quite a complicated job.

    Vehicle : Opel Signum

    Trim : Sport

    Engine : 3.0 CDTI

    Year : 12/03

    Default

That'll be an AF33 in an 03 plate not an AF40

I'd suggest you get it done by a specialist...not a cheap game if the gearbox goes

Apparently the AF40 box is much more difficult to handle if you want to replace the fluids. That's why I pointed out the difference

The Vectra 02-55 reg Haynes book does cover the draining and refilling of the AF33 and AF40 autoboxes though. Section 7b2.

    Default Refilling AF23 auto box

My vehicle has the AF23 auto box and it was my intention to replace the oil later this month.

Reading the Haynes manual it appears relatively straight forward but the suggestion from some of the entries in this thread suggest otherwise.

Is there perhaps some difficulty in releasing the "selector cable end fitting" ? The manual states "using a suitable forked tool". Does it require a special tool?
If so what kind of thing is it?

Is there any other step that is likely to cause difficulty?

    Thanks,
    Dave

you cant change the filter is a complete strip and rebuild of the gearbox to do this i know stupid design but thats the japs for you (gearbox is made by aisin warner so is japanese)

i didnt have to remove any selector you will however need around 8-10 litres of oil as its a multiple part drain and flush the oil you need is type 4 atf and is quite expensive comma make one and call it asw (must be this oil or wont work properly)

release the drain plug underneath to drain the fluid probably only 2-3 litres i then replaced it and refilled through the sensor hole on the top as it saved removing anything other than 1 bolt check the level using the dipstick with the engine running in park once level correct leave running for 5 mins take for a quick spin (3 miles ish mixed driving) repeat this process around 3 times.
reason for this is the box just wont release the oil properly and like i said its kind of a flush fill process.
