2.2 Direct Rough Engine Noise on start up

My Vectra is a 2006 hatch with the 2.2sri direct engine. On initial start up the engine, 8 times out of 10, sounds like a bag of nails before quickly settling down.

Its been like this ever since I have owned the car. I met a gentlemen recently who had the same car & engine and on asking him how he liked it, without any prompting - he told me he liked it but it sounded rough on initial start up!

Is this a normal occurance on these engines or is it something to be concerned about.

Anybody offer any advice?

It is just a rough noise on start up, bit tappety, but quickly settles down to normal.

I bought the car at 8 months old with 10k on the clock, it is now on 28k. So not high mileage, could it still be the timing chain? I would say its probably been like this from day one.

yes as when you first start their is the lack of oil pressure.

Its the chain tensioner not the chain as such. This problem seems to be getting very common now.

funny how it happens when most are out of warranty

Would be interesting to know if its a wear problem or a build up of dirt from the oil. The fix is the NET tensioner which doesn't rely on oil pressure but a more traditional spring.

yes put a kit in a 07 2.2 direct last week

Is this something that needs to be sorted pretty soon, got a service planned for next month. So could raise it then.

If it needs doing, will it be costly?
