please help - need some advice on smoking from engine!!!

have a 1.9cdti signum, after each 500 -1000 miles i have smoke coming from the engine and it smells of diesel. also when this happens, it then smokes ferociously from the exhaust pipe.

my mpg is around 28-30 so is a prob here aswell.

any ideas?

what is the dpf please????? and what do i do?

absolutly nothing the DPF is a diesel particulate filter kinda like a mesh filter in your exhaust its used to trap soot and allow the engine to meet strict new emmissions guidelines every so often the filter get clogged with soot and needs to regenerate this is done by injecting more diesel to kinda make a deliberate chimney fire in the exhaust and burn off the soot.

this on your car is normal the smell and the smoke id just the regeneration program best to have a decent drive whilst its regenerating as if it dosent get a proper regeneration and becomes permanently blocked the next lot of smoke is from pound notes for a new DPF

but should i be getting smoke from the engine if it is the dpf regenerating??

no you shouldnt i would get the exhaust system checked (use a local place not national chain like kwikfit) as a partially blocked DPF will increase pressure in the exhaust pre filter (engine side) and it may be coming from a leaking exhaust
