    Default Help With Brakes

    HI Guys

As my brakes have started lightly grinding I think its time to replace the pads, the discs all look ok, i would prob do the rear pads at the same time.

I just have a few questions, my car is a 1.8 facelift non vvti, I believe it’s the Z18XEL engine, are the pads for the Z18XEL and the Z18XER the same? Does my car have a wear sensor? I guess not as i would have expected it to have came on.

Does anybody know roughly how much “prick fit” or any of these places would charge me for a pad change?

I wouldn’t normally go somewhere like that but as we are living in Manchester now and I have nowhere to work on the car I was going to change these at the weekend when we are up at my girlfriends parents in Scotland (Ayr) but am worried it wont go to plan, as I have only ever done this once before on my old car and we would end up stuck with no car!

    Thanks

    Stuart

Your disks are 285's mate. All Vecs and siggys have this size except V6's and the petrol Turbo. The sensor is on the front left inner pad only, and the rears tend to wear faster than the fronts. Cant help with fitting prices as I always do my own. HTH

Try to avoid kwik fit mate, they'll want to replace the discs, shocks, springs exhaust etc too lol, They'll also use crap parts, go to the stealers and ask them how much first. They may surprise you (that can be used in two senses lol)

All of the Vec's have the same brake set up, the only differences are the sizes, but the pads for 278's on one Vec are the same as the 278's on another

    As said AVOID KWIKFIT.
I got quoted £98 by National Tyers for the rears but thats way too much imo. If you do decide to diy you'll need a piston rewind tool for the rears (or you could use pointy nose plires but they didnt work for me as pads were too worn and piston out too far).
i also got quoted £25 by local tyre place for fitting the pads i'd bought for £19, but you can get a rewind tool for that price

go to euro car parts, they sell good quality parts. just done the complete set on the vectra, disks as well all round for just over £150

The pads are easy to fit on these. no real specialist tools required for the fronts. Rears need a wind back tool for the pistons. but still easy to do.

If you go for the discs as well you will need a E20 torx socket for the caliper carrier to be removed.

it took me longer putting my tool box away and washing my hands
